I am in the process of making 380 long rifle cases out of 38 spcl cases. I am using cast heeled bullets. How do I crimp them? Dave at Lee told me, that their collet type crimp die would not work, they tried to create a collet type die but were not successful.

You are some how going to have to create enough case wall tension to hold the bullet. Your crimp will most likely just roll the belling back to match the OD of the bottom of the heel.

As these are orphan rounds, I doubt anyone will come up with the right tooling, but a collet system is a good idea.

It seems to me that a collet type crimp die would work just perfect, if the land is short enough to crimp just the very end of the case. What problems are the boys at Lee talking about?

Go to Leverguns.com and check out the article on the .475 Achillies, it uses a healed type bullet and they crimp it with a modified Lee collet die. I have heard that in the old days they used a pliers type tool for crimping - similar to the wire crimper as previously mentioned.

x2 for the .475 achilles article. It is a great article.

I am curious what is CTC? Is there a wire crimper large enough to crimp a .454 heel in a OD .476 case?

Darn I was hoping it was an industrial supply store that sold good quality stuff!
Thanks for the acronym help
