Is there much love out there for the Crosman 13xx models? Anyone have a version they upgraded? Should one get the .177 or .22 version?

Thanks

They tend to be a love or hate type thing. I am in the unusual camp where I bought a 1322 a few years ago, fired it 3 times and thought, forget all this pumping and sold it.
I recently re-bought one and while I wouldn't want to shoot it for long, it is not bad fun for $80 worth so have changed my mind on them. I was getting a very good group across the basement with its peep sight and optional stock (never wanted to use it as a pistol). On the weekend I installed a steel breech and scope as the peep is hard to see in poor lighting.
I went for the 1322 because the 1377 is detuned to keep it under 500 fps whereas the 22 is so anyway. I don't know how they do it - strangled transfer port maybe - but anyway, I don't like buying anything that is detuned. Bought a HW45 in 22 for the same reason.

The pumping seems like it might be a bit of a killer. I like the customization though. At the price point I think just try it and see.

I bought mine 35 years ago and still love it, it can shoot beer caps at 10m and has enough power to fully penetrate a rabbit skull. Great for occasional partridge while moose hunting. It is a little slow to load but for occasional “pot” shots it works. Mine is a 1322 and shoots at 410 FPS w/ Crosman pellets.

There are the similar models that use CO2. The 2240 and 2300T. Looking at the similarity of design, maybe it's possible to swap the .22 barrel for a .177 barrel for the 2240?

The Crosman barrels are all 7/16" what fits the pumpers fits the 2240.A flat top piston and or a longer barrel will boost velocities you can cap at just under 500 fps. I'm having a 2289 14" barrel done and have a custom 2240 with 10 " barrel that is lights out on chickens at 20 yards head shots are easy.Shoulder stocked into a carbine 495 fps with a 14.3gr pellet.Steel breech added to both for strength and scope mounting topped with a 4x Banner 1" Lothar Walther makes a match .177 barrel in 10" length if accuracy is paramount.D+L airgun in BC has barrels.

^now THAT sounds interesting...

To the question~I got a 1377 for my 16th birthday, that was 33 years ago. It was used hard for a almost 20 years, had it's seals done 2X...and has mostly sat dry-docked ever since. Shoots hard still, doesn't leak air. At the time, Crosman offered this gun with the black, 1399 "carbine"/skeletal stock, but the pistol grips came with it too. Boy..if that 1377 could talk. :)

I use it once in a while now, mostly for nostalgic reasons....but I've often thought I'd like to buy one of the new 1322s, and a fresh 1399 to go with it. Maybe I'll pick mbogo3's brains a bit...see what it might take to get a stocked 1322 (still shooting 12g CO2) up around the 490s. Would be a fun, light, hard-hitter.

I think they're hard to beat honestly, and if anyone can make a -$100 pump-up air gun right, it's Crosman. I can even attest to their ability to penetrate, thanks to some carelessness on my buddy's part. (kids+late 70s+no parental supervision) I got lucky, but there may/may not be a .177 watcutter somewhere in my body. lol

The problem with the 2240 and the pumps is even with the shoulder stocks they are considered pistols so one needs to stay just below the 500fps threshold .The 2250 is a carbine rifle version and parts interchange but the RCMP have taken it upon themselves to know more than the manufacturer and say they are also pistols.I have the owners manual that states in English rifle. Even 600+ fps is doable with 18" barrels. But not happening here.By replacing the hammer spring in a pumper with a 2240 spring you can pump till you're cross eyed and it just bleeds off the excess air just under 500 fps in .22 version at least. There goes my plans of world domination with my Crosman grouse gun............foiled again! The Canadian Airgun Forum is a good place to get some ideas. The nice part about pumps over CO2 is they are not effected by sub zero weather all you need is muscle and pellets.I have dozens of grouse and 2240 carbine pics but Photobucket has them held hostage. The cure that was posted here doesn't work.

I was thinking of converting my 1322 to the specs of the discontinued "backpacker" air rifle but apparently once a handgun, always a handgun so I can't use it for grouse hunting in BC.

By the way, for a 22 cal Crosman 1322, what's the velocity gain per inch of barrel @10 pumps (give or take)?

Last question: if I mod my handgun and somehow it gets tested by the RCMP, what pellet weight are they going to use? There are 9grain pellets that exceed 500fps in pretty much any application.

They consider the backpacker 2289 a pistol because it can be fired with one hand with the stock off? They came with a 14" pipe I think. With a custom flat top piston and a different hammer spring can make 550fps with a longer 24" barrel 600+is doable from what I've read where it's legal. With mine a flat top piston and a 2240 hammer spring is supposed to stay just under 500 fps no matter how many times you pump it it will just bleed off.Head shot chickens at 20 yards are going nowhere.I see no reason for anyone to chrony your gun unless you get into trouble with it somewhere.I had mine set up with the 14.3gr standard dome pellet. You can buy velocity adjustable hammer spring and tweak the fps that way.My 2240 is set for 495fps with a 4x Banner 1 " As for fps /barrel length there comes a point where barrel length doesn't increase speed.I also changed the breech to a Crosman steel one for scope mounting etc.If you go with a longer barrel the front barrel band may need to be changed out so you still have a front sight.

Is there a statement from the rcmp anywhere that a 2289 is a pistol?

If that’s true... i can’t even...

How do I file as a refugee to Texas?

I don't think there is an official classification of the 2289 as a pistol
Upgrading the 1322 to something identical to 2289 is a potential issue
I will call the RCMP asking about it

I think it is because it has a detachable stock on fails the OAL for a rifle dissembled. The RCMP won't know squat and if you talk to 3 people you will get three different answers.Just mod it to under 500fps and who cares.

there are 9grain pellets in 22 cal so staying under 500fps is a tough goal
I will ask the RCMP CFP guys about this too

The current rule is <500fps AND less than 5.7joules muzzle energy. If the 9gr pellet is coming out of there fast enough to go above the Joules limit, then you have a problem, but check with a chrony and run the numbers before you panic and detune. Usually the lightweight silly pellets (which no serious shooter would use anyway because they're awful for accuracy) stay below the muzzle energy requirement. This calculator helps for plugging in your numbers:

You can also shoot peppercorn from your airgun velocity unknown? Pick a middle weight pellet commonly used or leave it as is if too stressful.

I bought my 1322 15+yrs ago.
I've since added an extended steel breech kit and a rear LPA adjustable sight. I like the fact that 3 pumps is good for general basement plinking and 10 can...well you know.
It's also very accurate and the .22 pellets give a satisfying "twack" sound.....
