Crosman 2240 bbl length?

Hi "airgunners", I picked up a 2240 a while back and now I want to mod it.
Basically just make a carbine out of it. What bbl length is more ideal for a CO2 ctg, 10.1, 14,18 or 24?
This will be used for wabbits, gophers, chickens(grouse) and such.

I know if you are looking for power, the shorter barrel is out as you will get more umph out of a longer barrel (when using c02)......but I have no idea at what point the length makes no differenc to fps.
 
With the stock valve in the gun the 14" is about as good as it gets. But with a stronger or adjustable tension hammer spring the 18" will take better advantage of the extra expanding gas.

Just note that you might want to get a 2250 conversion kit and steel breech with before you start making changes. The 2240 if shot over 500fps would be considered a handgun even if you put a longer barrel and stock on it. Building on the 2250 receiver (tube) means that you are now building a rifle not a pistol.

Then you can start getting into custom valves, triggers longer barrels and even bulk CO2 or HPA with out technically being in possesion of an unregistered restricted firearm.

Do check out D&L and another good one called Scopes and Ammo AKA Fox Sporting Goods. Lastly if you want to start bulking instead of using up 12g CO2 (which you will like candy once you mod the hammer spring and valve) Go to the Crooked Barn.
Jim Giles there makes some real nice guns on the Crosman platform and sells custom bulk valves and even repeter breeches.
 
Don't forget the 500 fps rule. A 14" barrel and a modified valve should get you in the high 400s. A 24" barrel might put you over as it will then be very similar to a 2260 which is a firearm.

I'M looking for accuracy and slight power and this will be a carbine when finished.
I checked out D&L as well as Scopes & ammo, both have equally agreeable prices.

So I just ordered a 22250B Conversion kit and a Crosman .22 Steel breech kit.
Plus I scored on some Co2 12g at Walmart, 15/$11.36 :rockOn:

And......while surfing on Canadain Airguns Forum I checked out the For Sale forum and ended buying another 2240 :eek:

Sure is addictive! Did the 2240 you buy have any mods done already? I've made some good deals buying other people hobbies. :) I picked up a 2240 with custom target grips, two barrels, steel breach and rear velocity adapter for about $120 once.

Also if you're still looking for barrels and a shoulder stock try "Scopes and Ammo" (AirgunEric on the CAF), he's given me a lot of good service the last couple of years and can get any Crosman part available.

Yeah the 2240 I bought comes with walnut grips, power adjuster, new spring, trigger, 12"bbl, air stripper, muzzle break and carry case.

I also have a 24" bbl enroute from D&L.
 
I purchased two 24 inch long 2260 barrels and installed one on my Crosman Backpacker. I got X velocity with 10 pumps on the valve setup I had. I cut the barrel in 1 inch increments and deburred the crown . The velocity went up a little at 23, 22, peaked at 21 and then started to go down at 20, 19 and 18 inches. I stopped at 18 inches. I then cut the second barrel at 21 inches, crowned it and installed it.
Your experience may not follow mine as it is dependant on the porting and valve pulse characteristics of your particular gun. Tweaking the characteristics of an airgun is a fun hobby.

+1 i've order a few hundred dollars worth of stuff from them with very good results.

modified my 1377 with a stock, new piston kit and steel breech.
