Crosman Phantom 495 - now what do I do?

I was lucky enough to pick up an essentially brand new Crosman Phantom 495 fps .22 air rifle and pellets for $50. So, what do I do next? I do want to plug the bleed hole to get the power up to crow-killing levels, but are there other things to do as well? I haven't even fired it yet, but I know people try to do things to reduce the twang, clean the cylinder and re-lube the seal, etc. Does it need a stronger spring or is this one fine? And any thoughts about the trigger would be helpful as well.

Why do I keep getting myself these little projects?

There were different generations of phantoms, the original ones had an extra long piston that had to be cut down or replaced, the next gen had a bleed hole that needed to be plugged and the most recent come with a week spring that needs to be replaced.

Scopes and Ammo. They sell Crossman parts and will be able to get you what you need. The owner, Eric, knows his stuff. Remember, making it shoot over 500fps means it's a controlled firearm and you'll need to store it like a firearm and have a valid PAL to posess it.

Go over to Canadian Airgun Forum, lots of info on the Phantom type guns there. Lots of knowledgeable guys there, some even know everything

Charlie the tuna is a great trigger for it. Pop bottle spring sleeve as stated in the PM. And as already stated the older phantoms are easier to modify. There are about 3 different combos of short/long pistons with/without bleed holes and different power springs...

Okay, I've disassembled the CS5M22. No bleed hole in the 6" long piston, spring is 9.5" long, at the end there is a 1.5" long three-tiered spacer on the spring guide. Now I see what the "top hat" is. I felt no burrs inside the cylinder.

I think a recommended lube is air tool oil, no?

So I will order the above-mentioned spring and spend some trigger time with it. And I understand there are some areas to polish and grease so they move freely.

The spring sleeve is a good mod, gets rid of a bit of twang. I made one out of brass shim stock.
It's been as few years, but there is an easy mod for the trigger. I think it was removing the return spring, or something similar. I think the guy who came up with the mod is a member here, maybe Tony will chime in. As I mentioned, head over to the CAF for lots of info.

Thats where I got mine . Get a spare piston seal while your at it.

The only complaint I have about the rifle is the trigger. I started shooting Saturday afternoon, and the creepy trigger pull was so long it finally fired Sunday morning. Man, it felt like the trigger moved about 1/2" before it fired. How do I adjust some of that play out, it's brutal!

You will find all of your answers, and more at the CAF. Guys have been working on these guns for years.
Look for info on the RC bearing trigger mod, as well as the one I mentioned previously.

Okay, I received the B18-00-4D spring. Definitely beefier. However, with the original factory 3-tier spacer it doesn't seem to fit. It's hanging up on something. Any thoughts? For the time being I just left the spacer out. Harder to ####, fires with much more authority.
