lets hear your opinions on them..good or bad
ive been talking a few years about getting one ,its time to either #### or get off the pot:redface:..
what would you,s recommend for a set up for a newbie?

An Excal is the best for a newbie IMO.They have a complete bow package that will get you started without breaking the bank. They also have a great warranty, with fast service. You can also change your own string out in the field if need be.

I've got an excaliber exocet and really like it.I got the accessory pack with mine and I would suggest you get it .Comes with scope and mount and quiver.I also picked up the carbon bolts and use a 130grn wasp cam-lok broad head.It is very accurate, shoot more than one bolt at a target and you will likely destroy the last bolt.40 yards about the max as its fast but noisy.
I shot a tenpoint and I got to say it was a sweet shooting rig also. The tenpoint seemed to be more compact and better handling.

Here is a few new inverted concept bows that are pretty neat.I would wait to see how they pan out before buying one though.

I bought one this year. I'm a long time compound bow guy and kinda frowned upon them. You know the whole "gun with a string" ideal that the high falutin archery guys have....:p. Anyways, to make a long story short, I didn't have the time to practice much this year with the compound bow and I wasn't confident in my ability to make a good shot on a deer with it. So out I go shopping for a crossbow. I ended up with an Excalibur Vortex, the "right stuff" accessory package and their Lumi-zone scope. A key selling feature for me was the thumbhole stock on this model. Makes it much easier to handle the bow (one handed) in the tree stand. If I were to buy a compound style crossbow it would be a Tenpoint Titan TL-7. More compact that anything from Excalibur, but I like the simplicity of the Vortex. Made in Canada too...

Crossbows take elements from archery that I like, plus I get to put the crosshairs on a deer and pull a trigger. Technology has come a long way in the noise / vibration department, but crossbows are still pretty loud. Accuracy is fantastic (use a cocking aid) and I didn't have to fiddle around at all when changing over to broadheads. An added bonus is that crossbows are much easier to shoot late in the season when your all bundled up.

These are the very best. Click anywhere on the pic for the web site

This cannot be argued, they are definitely the best. However I think it's worth mentioning that a compound bow doesn't require a drawing device to maintain accuracy because it's centers automatically whereas a conventional limbed crossbow does not.

For those who don't know, when drawing a bow by hand it will shoot left or right of center without drawing a device because you will always pull harder with one of your hands.

That should come as a warning with them, it's real easy to hit your own arrow, even kneeling, i now fire only one arrow at each target. It gets real expensive busting carbon arrows.
As to drawing off center, it's true, the cocking aid makes it easier to be more accurate, however, if you mark the bow string on both sides of the stock with white out, you can keep the string pull straight even by hand.

By the way, crossbows can be a ##### to pull without the cocking aid if you have a bad back. I find it easier, if I'm seated.
The cocking aid is cheap anyway.

I would also recommend you guys get a pack of CSS String Tunerz, you get 4 in a pack for about $12. I used 2 on my bow and the sound level dropped big time. Also bass pro has some nice padded cases $69

I think that shooting a string rifle compared to a real archer. Is a joke. The fact that someone that calls themselves a hunter with an xbow is a joke. JUst because you want to hunt longer and use the excuse as an archer to do so is a joke! Take the time to learn to shoot with a bow and be satisfied with your kill. Don't be a part time wanna be archer and think your cool. When you are a 100% bonified idiot string rifle shooter posing as an archer. Crossbows should be banned from archery regs! I will tell you one thing. If Jane and momma weren't so hot! I would have a hard time being fiends with you beer drinking, good looking, A1 to be around, great guy crossbow hunting guys.. If you are gonna stoop to the level of an xbow hunter than atleast do the country a favour an buy an EXCAILBER!

Dave.

Everyone has their opinion, but this is going a little over board really.

What I don't agree in is the Comment made on Practice. Everyone has it bent in minds that Compounds need a lot of Practice. Bows these days Do Not need the practice they used to 25 years ago yes, but updated compounds do not. The way they are built, setup and shooting, one can put a little time into a target practice section and be as deadly as they we're the last year. Anchor points don't change, train yourself to use the same one all the time.

What bothers me is Crossbows are taking over and people that don't care if they can hit a dime or not on a target, sit in trees and hits game and loses it and the Non hunter walks onto it or they see a duck walking around in Central Park in Toronto with an arrow stuck in it, not from a crossbow but a compound . That gives all Bow hunters a bad name, Crossbow hunters are archers but practice shot placement and eithical shots and it will put us all in the same catagory...

I was going overboard Adrian. It was meant as a joke towards my buddy. But I have to disagree with your statement about practice. Yes bows of all types are much more sophisticated and user friendly these days. But and this is what I strongly believe in. The one thing that comes with practice that does not involve the mechanics of shooting. A very important thing that in my opinion is very important. That is range estimation! That is not something that most people can develop by shooting at the same target a couple times a year. Just my 2 cents worth.

With practice comes consistancy. With consistancy comes accuracy. Drawing your bow, your anchor point, sight picture / peep alignment, aim and release all have to be automatic. The more you do these things, the less you have to "think" about them. Maybe not such a big deal at the range, but when your pedator instincts kick in and your heart stops pumping.....

Don't get me wrong, crossbows need practice too (especially wrong handed) and the only way to get good at range guess-ta-mation is to actually go out and do it. And don't forget to practice in your (bulky) hunting clothes. My brother missed a nice buck this year because his PSE compound's sting caught his jacket collar and threw his shot way off :(.

I have a Eastman X-Force 300 it was reasonablely priced and has good accuracy.I have never sat in a tree yet or sat in a blind to get a deer .
I have shot 4 deer with it so far.3 in the bush one on point.
I use a old tire with styrofoam in the center rolled for practice on moving targets .
