There's a litter of chocolate lab X german shorthaired pointers I'm waiting for a call back on...

What kind of characteristics do you think this breeding would produce? I'm not that familiar with GSP's...

Good bird dog? Steady, or hyper?

Or should I hold out for a well bred lab?

Luck of the draw really, could be a abit of both in many different situations.
Sounds like an interesting mix IMHO. :) If you get one (or two) you HAVE to post pics. :D

I had a lab crossed with a german shorthair before. She was a good hunting dog. She loved the water, was a great retriever and she pointed on grouse and pheasants. I even used the dog to track a wounded coyote. (successfully) That dog was the best pet/friend I ever had. I had to put a lot of work into training her to wait for my command to flush or retrieve. She was really smart and very agile. If you want IMHO a really good dog get one of those pups. If I didn't work insane hours and lived on an acreage I would come up there and get one today.

I don't know the cross personally, but for hunting purposes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a cross breed IMO.
Even mutts can be brilliant, I've seen lots of dumb dogs (No offence to dumbdawg :D) even the purebreds.

I'm not familiar with this cross but man, if it turned out with the instincts of both breeds like adog's:

You'd have an awsome hunting dog!

I've had and been around a lot of lab crosses and I can't think of a bad one I've met. The lab/water gene has always been there that's for sure.....

yup... a good cross... makes me think about that "pointing lab" strain that has been developped.

Look at the pup more than at thwe parents.

GSPs are bold and are made for running all day. Labs, hunting labs, are strong and a tad calmer... sitting by the hunterr and wainting for birds to be gunned down.

YOUR dog will be a multi-purpose one and that's great.

READ on training, train it in obeidience first and make noise around it will get it accustomed, eventually, to gun shot (work this in gradually!!!)

Congrads!
