Cross dominance shooting

BTW Rob - leaving aside the funky bent stock on the SxS above……

The tagline in your posts is the absolute best. May have to steal and use it here and there.

KK got it my bestest shooting partner was same switched to left handed shooting was a great trap shot in the end.The magic dots I found online as well delivered to Canada $11.00

Thanks for posting the info in this thread. I'm one of the lucky ones who's a right hand shooter, with a left eye dominance. I am going to try out those magic dots. See if this will help.

I was a left hand shooter with right eye dominant. It never bothered my since I did not shoot with both eyes open anyways. However, when I got into flintlocks in about 1985, I did not want a left handed flint so I taught myself to shoot right handed. Did not take too long. One HUGE advantage to teaching yourself to shoot opposite is when hunting. If I am standing near a tree, for example, and a deer shows up to my right, I can shoulder the gun left handed and shoot without adjusting my body. If it shows up to the left, I shoulder on the right and again, can shoot comfortably without having to adjust my body position. One of the reasons all my suppository hunting rifles are ambidextrous IE, Ruger No1, High wall, low wall, Sharps etc

I missed a lot of ducks over the years before I learned I was cross dominant.

Now, I kinda squint my left eye while I shoot. I don't close it entirely, just enough to shift dominance to my right eye.

My muscle memory has picked up the habit nicely enough, and it still leaves me with a built-in excuse for the times when I miss!

However, I did teach myself to shoot lefthanded for a season or two, and I must say that I did very well. In fact, that was the point where I went from a duck misser to a duck killer. I didn't stick with it, because I hate shooting right-cast guns from the left, and my style of hunting (mostly jump shooting) relies on quick handling, and I could never make myself comfortable shooting lefthanded in a hurry.

My wife's little brother had the same issue and taught himself to shoot left handed. We make a good pair at duck hunting on foot, because between the two of us we can cover a pretty broad killing field, shooting off different shoulders, and I can still always switch to the other side if needed. That helps when you're shooting ducks 360-degrees around you in a tidal creek.

I tried shooting left handed the other day. I found it a little awkward and slow. But I'll give it another go today.

Learn to shoot left handed if you wish to be a proficient at shotgun shooting it will not take long to master it that meaning a few 1000 rounds as for the rest of the suggestions they are do able but you will never be at your best with those systems

My scores haven’t been good last few weeks. I tried the triangle trick and wow, my left eye is dominant now. This only happens over a month. I’m a right handed shooter and always wondered why I couldn’t shoot two eyes open. I’m going to try the dot

I’ve been shooting a right handed bolt action for years left handed and just swapped. The feeling was 100% better and I can work the bolt in a off cover standing position now.

It works for me, I tried to learn to shoot left handed. It was much easier to just use the dot and I shoot as well using it as I did when I was right eye dominant and didn't have to retrain myself to shoot left handed.

I tried something similar to the magic dot years ago for another purpose and it gave me headaches. But that's just my experience and it may work for you.

I found switching to shooting left handed quite easy.

Not hard to do just do it especially if you miss a lot the difference will astound you . Only problem is working the bolt as a lefthanded bolt action is hard to work with a useless hand.

I could count on two fingers the number of bolt action shotguns I've seen used in clays games in 40 years and we are talking cross dominance issues while shooting shotguns in the clays games. There is a big difference between learning to wingshoot from the opposite shoulder than working a bolt action rifle and taking the odd shot at big game or sighting in off a bench.
