Just started shooting and would like some help in dealing with my cross dominance issue(right handed/left eye dominant) . Are there any techniques or exercises I can use while learning to shoot my pistols (G22 and a M&P 9mm ).Any help would be appreciated .
 
Practise, Practise, Practise.

I have the same problem, when I change hands. Can shoot with both hands equally well, but I am left eye dominate (wierd I know)

All I've ever done is practise getting comfortable with both hands and one eye. As a kid I had a video game console machine (don't remember the name) that had a plug in handgun and you had to shoot the white block bouncing around the TV. Perfected my targeting there.

That's all I can say.

Two eye open, very simple. My daughter is same as you.

here is the tip of the iceberg: when holding your gun out in front of you with both hands and lining up the sights on your target......turn your head slightly to the right until your chin touches your right bicep. this should line up your left eye with the sights. that's how i do it.
 
I'm in the same boat. When I bring the pistol up to shoot I line up the sights on my left eye. Much like what Manboy has recommended but my chin doesn't touch my right bicep (girly arms....:redface:) Cross eye dominance is not a major obstacle and there are many in our position. Good luck, but above all, have fun. YMMV.
 
Count me in: left eye/right shoot...

You always hear shoot with both eyes open...

When I try to do this it's a bloody mess - blurred sights, or target, or both.:confused:

I too have tried the 'head turn'.

I thought that it was bad technique....but I suppose missing your target is a far worse technique.

Right handed, left eye dominant also .... When I extend my arm and make a hole between my thumb and my other fingers, fix a point on the wall with both eyes open, then proceed to close one eye then the other the "point of aim" for lack of a better term, end up being completely different, fascinating stuff really.

if it didn't work, you're doing it wrong. your head shouldn't really turn.... more like point your chin toward your arm a little bit so that your eye can line up with the sights.

this is assuming you are using an iscocoles type stance.......
 
I'm also left eye / right hand dominant. As I first learned to shoot, left-handed-ism was considered a sign of effeminancy, so I was encouraged to shoot right handed, and just close my left eye (for marksmanship shooting) - for instinctive shooting, you'll have both eyes open and focussed on the target anyway.

I was just trying to hold right-hand dominant with my left eye open, and I have no problem lining up the sights... What stance are you using?

I'm also in the left eye, right hand boat.

No issues shooting handguns but shotguns, what a PITA. I'm actually considering relearning to shoot left.
 
The recommended procedure for training cross-dominant individuals is to have them shoot with the strong eye side. If left eye strong - learn to shoot left handed. The theory is that it's easier to train a physical coordination than it is to train a new neural pathway and suppress a dominant one. It may try your patience initially but you will be a better shooter in the long run.
You have to ask whether the prize is worth the price and how much time you
have to dedicate to acquiring it. Good shooting !
 
But then I'd have to go out and buy a whole new closet full of holsters!

And THAT would just NOT fly with the boss - Er, the wife...

wrong. and absolute bull#### on so many levels. here's a newsflash: the use of either hand will require a neural pathway.

get some formal training and an education on shooting instead of recommending that someone switch hands completely, as opposed to turning their head slightly.

are you right handed? stop using it to write, and only use your left. let me know how many years it takes before it feels somewhat normal.

while their have been RARE instances where cross-eye dominance was such an issue that people had to switch hands, it is not COMMON as your post indicates.
