Cross referencing with powders

When ever I am starting a new project like everyone else I research manual and solid internet sites to get some starting loads ( Min- max for a certain bullet) etc.....

However, I often do not have the powder listed in these sources but would have another suitable one on hand. It is impossible to just buy a pound of what I need as i live too far from places that may have it and as is typical when I do get there what i need is never there.

My question is " Does a cross reference table or data exist ?" that would be able to determine if say ...

For a 180 gr bullet from company X with a load of 62 grs of powder brand A wouls be similar to Y number of grains of powder B and so on


Or even when looking at a burn rate list would a load of powder A be safe to use with other powders within its range on the burn rate rankings.
 
Basically, no.

You need data for each powder you want to load for each bullet you want to load. In most cases data for a given bullet weight can be used as a rough guide for another bullet of the same weight. Hornady 55gr soft point vs Sierra 55 gr fmj etc. You can't convert IMR 4895 data to Reloder 22.

If you do a bit of research, you will find that several powders are very similar.

What you're really looking for is a burn rate chart and a decent handloading manual. Anyone that handloads without access to a manual, is looking for a KABOOM. Not IF but WHEN.

Two powders that are close to being identical are H414 and Win 760. The charts for them are interchangable.

Now, get something very clear. It doesn't matter which powder you get ahold of, just because it has a designtion on it, doesn't mean each lot will give you the same result.

Powder burn rates are regulated by their coatings. It's next to impossible to get the coatings identical from lot to lot.

Just recently, I was talking to a fellow about a 25 year old 30-06 that always performed well and all of a sudden the groups opened up to about 4 inches at 100 yards.

He has been loading for it with a 5 pound bag of surplus 4831 that he bought with the rifle.

He doesn't shoot much and used the powder in the 30-06 and a 270 Win.

He finally ran out of the surplus powder and primers, so he went out and bought a keg of H4831sc along with a pack of 1000 primers.

His 06, reacted negatively toward the new powder. The new powder, burned a bit faster than the surplus lot and changed the harmonics on his pencil thin featherweight barrel.

He loaded up several cases with 1 grain increments and proceeded to shoot them until one group of three tightened up. Then he modified that load a bit more. His rifle is very fussy and is one of the few that actually reacts to a half grain difference in a load of H4831, which is such a great powder because it's so forgiving.

The powders I have on hand that would work is some IMR 4064 and IMR 4895 and H4895

would it be safe to use min load for one as a starting place for all of them ?

You have 5 kinds of bullets on hand, why not have 5 powders as well, or more? FS
 
If you go to the Lapua website there is a Powder burn chart that is very helpful... it will allow you to identify powders from different manufacturers that have comparable burn rates.. They also have a load data for their powders as well..

You need to use the data for each powder and bullet weight. All of your powders are Hodgdon made so the free data on Hodgdon's website will cover most common needs.

You cannot safely use IMR 4895 data for 4064 loads, or use the starting 4895 loads for 120gr bullets when loading 140gr bullets instead.
 
if i understand correctly what the op is trying to do is this ......

he is wanting to take a specific 140 grain bullet made by the "acme bullet company " and only finding reloading information for a type of powder that he does not have ( and is difficult for him to obtain ) .

what i would do instead is this ....

pick a powder you want to use , and use relaoding information for just a generic 140 grain bullet . ( make sure it is from a credible source , like the powder company it self )

then slowly work your loads up till you start seeing signs of pressure .

if your only variable is the company / person who makes the 140 grain bullet ( everything else being the same ) all the reloading info you will run into will be similar ..... and really not much different than going from one brand of cases to another .... or switching to different primers .

this would be much safer than trying to convert reloading values from one powder to another .....
 
There are only a few major smokeless powder mfg. in the world that make all smokeless powders many brands we all know and love are made by the same companies and sold to the various powder companies like Allaint and Hodgdon to name a couple under there own brand name and sold under different names as well as the mfg. own brand name that makes them.

Some powders may have slight changes to there composition to improve performance while some are exactly the same powder with just a different label on the can and the only variation is from lot to lot burn rates. However you simply just can't swap a powder you do have for one you don't without knowing who makes the powder,how it's burn rate relates to the caliber your using as well as components used and if the version you have is an equivalent to another brand. Thats simply just asking to either get a bullet stuck in your bore or blowing up your firearm and injuring yourself as well as others.

If you have a powder that isn't listed for a particular load it can be for a number of reason either it's to fast or to slow for a given caliber and bullet combination or it's simply just doesn't give the best preformance. However not all is lost as every major powder company has a tech support line you can call or email and get information about a particular load in mind. My advice would be to use that resource if you don't have reliable data.
 
Check the Hodgdon website. They have an interactive chart that you can input caliber, bullet weight, etc.
It will bring up suitable hodgdon powders, IMR powders, and winchester powders. Nice to have the three in comparison.

I don't think there is chart to directly compare 62 gr of X = __ gr of Y. I doubt any company would be willing to put this together, as there are many variables to consider that would prevent direct correlation of powder X and Y.
