Recently on this forum, I swapped a pristine Winchester M12 LW for a used TC .36 Seneca rifle for my lady. I wasn't using the shotgun and she wanted a ML, so a sacrifice was made.

It arrived with a cross threaded nipple, relocated front sight and plugged holes where a scope mount had been. I contacted both TC and Track of the Wolf regarding this and was told that if a 'smith couldn't re-tap the threads, it could be drilled out and rethreaded to the next larger size.

Fortunatley, a good local 'smith was able to chase the existing threads by properly lining the hole up on his drill press and had no problem as he has done this sort of operation before.

So - buyer beware, and if you ever have a similar problem, I have the man who can solve it for you.

id be careful with those threads. they are likely going to be weaker now. is it an inline or a traditional rifle ? an inline i wouldent be as worried about. but a traditional caplock the back pressure could blow out the nipple.

The reason I stuck with the rifle was that the Seneca is a little beauty, an ideal ladies rifle, especially in .36 calibre. If TC had not suffered a fire that destroyed the moulds for the breechblocks, they'd still be offering them.

That and the competition from Italian knock-offs killed the market.

I trust the 'smith's evaluation of the threads as all he did was 'chase' them with the correct tap. It's unlikely she'll get enough powder behind the 85 gr ball to generate enough pressure to blow the nipple.

Another story I heard about the demise of the TC Hawken rifles was that too many dip ####z were dropping multiple Pyrodex pellets down the tube of barrels not designed for that kind of pressure.

I won't comment on inlines save to say that they are to ML what geared pulley bows are to archery - an ingenious solution to a non-existent problem.

I was quite surprised to see that Thompson Centre is now owned by Smith and Wesson (?). Might have remembered it wrong, I was not expecting to see the two company names side by each. Certainly not a marriage foretold in ordinary conversation.

If you know what forced the merger (the fire, stupid management, poor sales) please jump in.

It was Track of the Wolf that gave me the info on what to do with the problem.They offer a complete kit to do the conversion to a larger thread.

The TC people were similarly very helpful and assured me that if properly done, the 'chasing' is adequate unless the nipple has been forcefully threaded. They told me about the kit from TOTW.

As for unlikely mergers,a good one was the acquisition of WRAC by Browning.
Historically, many rifles and shotguns that wore the Winchester name were John Browning designs.
I own three Browning 'Winchesters', a M12 20 gauge, an '86 45-70 and a '92 .44 Magnum. The Japanese can make me a 'Winchester' any time! I'm looking forward to a Browning-made M70 instead of paying the inflated price of an American made product.
