My brother in law just gave me an old Crossman 1400. It doesnt' work though. It will pump, but nothing happens.

I'm not going to keep it. I'm going to see if I can fix it and return it to him. It's in pretty good shape. I read that it's from the 70s and with 10 pumps should give 580fps.

Anyone have any good sites as to where I can find tear down instructions? haha.

I'm going to just start tearing it apart and go from there if I can't find any.

Getting a quad seal for the blow open valve, is usually the biggest PITA, other than actually getting it to seat in place without twisting. Get a couple.

The seal cups for the pump are a wee PITA to change too. Helps if you have a lathe, and can make some replacement parts. The brass ring has to be removed (destroys the seal) and then pressed back together. I suspect, but have not tried, that some bearing retainer type Loctite would work OK for installing the ring. It's pulling it off that's the booger. The shop in Edmonton, when he was still there, was cutting off the ring and replacing them with new made ones, to avoid damaging the pump rod.

Mostly, clean off the mungy oil around the reset spring and put a dab of fresh oil on all the pivot points, and leave it at that if all works OK. A seal kit is about $25, or you can put together most of the stuff you need from the seal and bearing place for pretty cheap. Even usable cup seals, I was told.

Pump with the action open, then load the pellet, eh. The valve can slide off if it was not reset correctly, and it can discharge as it's pumped.

Fun little airguns!

Had one of these when I was a kid and loved it. Felt like a real 22. It got burnt in a fire and I just a couple of years ago found another in mint cond. that had been re sealed. I will be keeping that one for nostalgic purposes and because they are a very nice quality (metal and wood) air rifle. Good luck with yours.

Well yesterday I found a hydrualics store that sold the proper size quad seals. I didn't have to remove the little ring to get it in. I bought 5 for $5. First try and I got it in.

I replaced all the 0-rings with new ones. I have to wait about a week, but the hydraulic shop is making me a new custom rod and piston out of aluminum fitted with a 0-ring for a seal. $65 to make it, minimum charge was an hour.

So last nite I reassembled the gun and now just have to wait for the new piston.

I hope it all functions properly for the $70 I've invested into it.

To be perfectly clear, for you and anybody that comes along later and reads this... The ring that has to be removed to change the part, is the ring that holds the pump cup in place, not the quad seal. This is the PITA part of fixing those particular Crosmans.
When the parts were available from Crosman, it was common to simply replace the whole assembly. Can't get 'em anymore though. There was a puller that was supposed to be able to remove the ring, but it didn't work really well. A Crosman tool.
Best not to play too much with the pump cup seal, unless you have a spare in hand and can afford some time mucking about getting it apart and back together. I have made several of the rings needed, and they have to be a pretty close fit to get them to press on and reliably retain the seal, without leaking a bunch and losing pressure there. Mild PITA.
Figuring out which seal to get from the Hydraulics place to replace the cup seal, is a bigger one.

Dunno if any of the aftermarket suppliers of seal kits have started stocking them or not.

I have two, a 1400, and a 140, both were easy fixes.
I fished the quad seals out with a safety pin point bent like a hook.
The pump seal came apart with a flat screwdriver sharpened to a flat point,
working it all around until the brass sleeve that held the seal moved enough to tap it off.
I got the seals from John at D&L Airguns in Langley, B.C. KD

Well I just got home from Alberta, and went and picked up the new custom piston/rod. I was skeptical if all this would work nicely. Well I tossed some grease on the 2 o-rings on the piston and installed it. Pumped it up 3 times ( which was hard to do because of the GOOD seal! ) and pulled the trigger. BANG and air came out the barrel. So now I have to buy some .22 pellets and pump it up 8-10 times and give er a go. I'm hoping to achieve over 600fps. BUT as long as it works half decent I'll be happy. My brother in law will love it.

I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

Well guess I lied. I don't have pics as of yet, but I just got in from shooting the rifle for the first time!

I purchased hollow point pellets at walmart. I pumped it up 6 times and gave it a go. I was VERY impressed at how fast it made 35yrds!

I then set up some beer bottles and shot from 25yrds. I pumped up 10 times nice and slowly... blew the beer bottles like I was shooting my 10/22 or mossberg tactical! I mean this little pellet gun is wicked!

My brother in-law wouldn't take the gun back, but said if he wanted to shoot it or pest control, he knows where it is!

I may end up re-doing the stock now......

I'll post up some pics soon..... no lies.. haha.
