First animal I ever killed was a crow. First time I ever fired a centerfire rifle at an animal, too. I remember it clearly, and my dad made me pluck it, gut it, and eat it. What was left of it, anyways, I hit it with a .243 Win and 75gr varmint bullet. The farmer who we were visiting use it for yardwork, he wanted the bird dead and dad didn't want me to be the one to shoot it. I was the guest so did as he asked, and I was a good son (still am, goddamn!) so followed through like dad asked.

I'm sure there is a lesson in there, but the net of it is crow tastes like a gamey venison. At least the thigh/leg that was left undamaged did.

One of the funniest hunts I’ve ever done you shoot one and it just pisses the rest off and they come flying in!great way to work on your shooting skills in the off season

I have found crows to be very smart and unusually hard to kill. I remember out chuck shooting and seeing crows two fields over. They sit fine until you raise your rifle and then they lift off. I guess they were shot at a lot.

I don't want to eat a crow so I don't actively hunt them. That being said they are on my short list for targets of opportunity. Defiantly spiced up some slow waterfowl hunts in the past.

Have all the gear and do a few hunts when time permits. If you can get in a good spot here 30 or 40 can be had in a few hours in the winter when they roost up. Best day I ever had was around 100 before i ran put of shells. Right place right time.

Crows and ravens generally get a pass around the farm, they don’t fúck with the chickens and they both chase off predatory birds. The ravens do steal duck eggs from my one neighbor, but that’s a whole nother story in itself. Our chickens lay in the nest boxes and the crows and ravens never go in the coop.

If they were causing problems I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot them, lately it’s been squirrels and the odd flicker that cause issues.

The corvids are really quite intelligent.
I shot a lot of crows at a rural dump where I lived for 6 years.
They learned pretty quickly how far away was safe to roost in a tree
In fact they even learned which vehicle I drove, and would fly
away as soon as I drove in to the dump.
At the time, I was shooting a very accurate Swift, and a perched
crow inside of 450 yards was in grave danger. :) :)

It's amazing how smart they are. When I got my 17hmr when I was 18 I took that gun to the barn every morning to try and pick off a crow or two in the pasture. I didn't really shoot crows anywhere else. After a summer of that I don't think you could get within 300 yards of a crow until the new crop came next year.
