Crow hunting! Tips, tricks, tactics, stories!

I love crow hunting with a .410 or 28 gauge and a 22LR. Don't really have any tactics. Just, find them, sneak in, shoot. Never used decoys. My 'call' is essentially me imitating crow sounds. It works. I do the same for ducks, and my throat works better than any duck caller I have ever purchased, used, or seen used by people I've hunted with. Who knew volunteering as a puppeteer during my youth would help so much? My worse day was two. Just could not find the damn things. Best was 157, between me, my sister and my dad. That was fun. And, if you haven't already, try one. They taste alright. Very dark meat, which I prefer in birds.
 
Oh, and I heard somewhere that seagulls are federally protected because it was the Queen mother's favourite bird. Heard it from an unreliable source(high school teacher, but one I didn't respect) Can anyone confirm this?
 
Found a great new tactic the other day that worked awesome - busting the "funeral."

After you shoot a crow and you clear out, the remaining crows keep an eye on the situation and as soon as they see you leave they will fly back into the kill zone to try to figure out what happened. They kick up a fuss over their dead buddies.

So, if you leave across a field or down a path, and then sneak back in through the woods, you can ambush this sad event! Their attention is focused on the dead crows, so if you have decent cover, you can get in pretty close.

I also heard something about it being bad luck to kill a gull as they can guide sailors to land blah blah blah...
 
.300 win mag with 110grn hollow points! it's like a cartoon. Red mist with black feathers floating down. You can reach out and touch them quite a piece away. Very humane and of course entertaining! Also a good pre big game tune up.:dancingbanana:

I was watching a nature of things episode about crows, appears they are a very intelligent and extremley social group of animals. They actually have the ability to think several steps ahead and use tools(twig) to solve problems on how to retreive food, etc. Quite amazing for a non primate species, let alone an avian species.

They seem to be able remember and differentiate human faces very well and communicate to their brethren if there is a unfriendly human aggressor on their turf. I guess if your shooting at them make sure your shot counts otherwise you will be branded an enemy of the clan:)

It's true.

I've harassed crows with calls and such before around my house and previous residences, and whenever I am in those neighbourhoods they always kick up a fuss. I have had them fly across town following me and calling the whole way, then fly around the house and watch me through the window when I go inside.
 
In other news, I was out hunting Saturday and noticed most crows seemed to be building nests.

Also, I couldn't call any in.

It was probably partly because I was hunting spots I've hunted before, but usually they will at least do a curiousity-call flyby, and I didn't even get that.

I wonder if it's crow mating/nesting season? Maybe I need a crow-in-rut call :p
 
Is there a season for crows or can you hunt them year round. Can't seem to find any credible information, and the regs. are vague at best mentioning only that you may hunt them among others. (Ontario).
 
Hopefully will get out this Saturday! Haven't been out in a while and I really need to so I can relax. A nice walk in the woods and pickin' off any crows I see will be mighty refreshing for the soul.
 
Walking the dog around the neighborhood, the crows used to follow. They would swoop and caw and apparently hated myself and my pup. I took it upon myself to bean one of the feathered bastards with a pebble. Now they caw when we come around, but will fly away immediately if I pretend to bend down and grab a stone.

I think I will make a point of looking for crows my next hunt.
