Crow Hunting

We're Allowed to hunt on Sunday's here on the Island ? Or is that just for crows and the like ?
On PEI Crows are not listed as wildlife... shoot em up. Same goes with Pigeons, starlings and most balck birds, (grackles, red winged Blackbirds, Raven etc) But for some reason, not Cormorants??

So who is getting ready for the crows this spring. I've been able to get out every 2 or 3 weeks on a saturday morning for a couple hours, each time having shot at least 1 crow...but i tell you what?!?!? the snow is starting to melt, the ground is all guey with all kinds of #### from the crows to eat (oh ya, i hunt near a sanitary landfill) and i cant wait for them to start building the nests. last year i had the best luck in the spring and cant wait for that again this year.

oh here's a good observation. crow decoys ALWAYS worked for me, but the crows can actually detect them now. i observed a number of different times crows heading right for the decoys flaring about 15 feet away...we probably over used them. that and calling, we havent been calling all winter...havent really needed to. we found that if they were coming our way and we cawed, well the changed paths, and if they werent coming our way...well sometimes they came for a look but most of the time they just ignored the calls. so now with not calling it's usually a case of "ah man 10 more feet" or bang on...and we're finding we're getting a lot more chances just knowing where the right spot to sit is and being well camoflauged!!!

I have a bubby that makes his own shot useing empty 22 brass filled with lead and he packs them into a 12 guage shell, Crazy.......

WAHOOOOOO....FINALLY A NIGHT SHOOT. got the ok from the wife (it's especially important now since we're expecting our first on July 8th!!!). Gonna intercept them on their nightly flight path. I usually stare at them in a distant off my patio wishing i was out there. So hopefully everything works out. It's currently -2 in fredericton with clear skies and a slight breeze...i'll keep you guys posted tomorrow morning!

Well that wasn't bad at all. Managed to take 4...but when we got there the crows were EVERYWHERE...and it was like "how the hell do we get from 'a' to 'b' without them seeing?!?" well pretty much as soon as we poked are head up, one crow caught on and within seconds a field of, let's say 3-400, lifted and were gone. we ended up sitting along the bushline where they were flying over top from behind us and we'd pick them off as they flew over. that was fun but we were suprised on how fast they caught on to that and kept seeming to push their flight path a little further down from us. anyways, definantly a lot of fun and i look forward to doing that again.

I bought a high power RMS Diana .177 and two Crow calls. I've lost count of how many crows this combo has dropped.

It's excellent hunting. Once get to learn how to 'talk' w/ them and get their social network figured out; getting 4-6 out of a tree w/ a single shot pellet gun is fairly routine. They're not stupid though. Once they are on to ya, the area needs to rest for a bit before they'll come to the calls again - Hence, that's why I use two calls.

Excellent developement of skills that then can be applied to other game. Good stuff for newbs and seasoned shooters alike.
Cammo up and go get'em!
