Crow Traps- lets talk.

cant you use a dog to protect them?

I like crows and toss food out on my street and offer them treats. So I don't see them as pests. But they do hate when my dogs are out in the yard.

but I can relate if you have birds and you want to keep them safe.

Crows can be really hard on, well, everything. They definitely don't need you feeding them.

couple of methods i have used in the past

build a larsen trap and stick a dead rabbit in it or a crow decoy

shoot a rabbit,split the bugger right open,stick it in a field,get back 200m with a 223
and wait.

grab a few crow decoys,set them out,build a hide,grab a 12g,shoot em as the flight in.
if you really want to bring them in,buy a whirly bird spinner, stick a couple of dead crows
on it,thats a fckn magnet.the more dead crows you stick out the more live crows will decoy in.

ive killed more crows that way than any other method, best day was 86.

I dated a cambodian girl that grew up using a burnt coil mattress to catch sparrows. I changed it slightly to snare crows. Burn a mattress and tie snares thru the coils and bait the mattress they land on it then stick their feet thru and get tangled. Worked great. Best part was watching my buddy trying to untie them.

I live in the crow capital of canada. We have several million migrate in in the winter. I shoot as many as i can. However the last few years has proved harder because geese hunters have paid off the farmers and cityiots have moved to the outskirts of town and dont allow shooting on their property

My old neighbour used to wire meat on set gopher traps and catch crows and magpies that way. When they pecked at the meat the trap would catch their head.

When I was a kid out on the farm I'd catch plenty of magpies with 0 or #1 leg hold traps that were used for weasels and muskrats. I'd put eggshells and deer hair below fenceposts and mount the trap to the top of the fence post with an electrical staple. Magpies are very suspicious but curious and will light atop the nearest high point associated with the bait ... which is usually the fencepost. Snap and you got it...every single time...

Have used an M-trap or Ladder Trap for catching starlings and have had crows as by-catch , but never targeted them only.
They are smart buggers, betting lots of bait time would be needed before actual capture sets would work

Had the crows trained at my old place. Could walk around the yard with a rake, stick or hoe in your hand and the crows would go about their business usually well within centre fire range. Sneak the barrel of the 243 around the corner a little to quick and they were gone. Great fun trying to sneak them from the yard using various cover as they were onto the window being opened on the back of the house.

Good luck as they are crafty buggers

Here's a tip for you.

I don't have a screen in my house without a bullet hole in it. Still have to be sneaky and stay back from the windows tho! haha

the best idea ever - build a remote controlled airsoft tank. airsoft is unregulated. You can go for BB or something bigger if the local by-laws permits.

set it out in the yard. use it to shoot them when they showed. they'll smarten up and run away when they see the tank. after that leave the tank out 24/7.
