I live in Durham Region (east GTA) and I'm looking for some Crown land where I can legally hunt small game, since I don't really know any landowners in areas where firearms can be discharged. So far I've hunted on the Nonquon Crown lands in Port Perry, but I was wondering if there's any more land within a reasonable drive from Durham. Any suggestions? I know about the Darlington provincial park where you can hunt migratory birds, but they're not in season anymore and the only weapon I have which could legally be used to hunt them is a crossbow and I ain't William Tell :D. Thanks to all who reply!

If you contact the local MNR, some of them have crown land maps for there area..

What do you ask for beyond the obvious? I went to the Aurora MNR and asked them for a crown land map and they said they had no idea what I was talking about!

I always go to canal lake, theres a trail road called juipter lane that is great way to get into the valley near the heart of the lake

its about 1.5 hours from gta

Aurora MNR sucks just a desk in the hallway left there now:eek:

im not sure if its right for me to say this ........BUT.....(notice its a a big but)..when asking for crown lands in all areas........when your asking of them.. at a municiple office.. just say your looking for areas to go on family hikes.... just to keep the anti hunters that work there from giving you some kind of bull crap
once you find the areas and the maps....
then check out the possibilties to hunt on them;) ..such as hunting regulations there and fire arm discharging..

Beerdog, have you been to the Nonquon Crown land area? It's in Port Perry, on the west side of Lake Scugog. You're allowed to hunt anything there, except in a small area which is preserved for some board of education nonsense (why aren't they teaching kids to hunt as part of their outdoors ed?)

Not sure what you're looking to hunt but if wolves and coyotes are your thing, you should definitely try it out. I found a nice clearing there with an old rotting tree stand- looks like deer could be feeding in that area during the fall season.

The MNR sells 1:15,000 scale Ontario Base Maps (OBM) that are extremely detailed for your walking around. The last time I bought some, their webstore interface was horrible and it was really easy to pick the wrong sheet. That said, the linework was much more detailed than 1:50,000 Natural Resources Canada sheets.

Hey, i didn't know of this piece of crown land. Could you PM me directions from Simcoe street? Or from Williams Arms? Its all i know in that area. I like to hunt for rabbit and grouse, etc...

Thanks.

What about Ganaraska Forest. It is $50 for a year pass for hunting, hiking, biking and cross country skiing. I have seen grouse, rabbits etc in there. There are tons of Coyote tracks too.

I went to the Ganaraska forest one time to hunt. I got out of my car with my rifle and a family was walking by, they saw the rifle. The i guess wife started screaming and yelling gun and the whole family went running away screaming.

I felt like a knob so I just left as quickly as I could and don't plan on going back.

I believe you can hunt in the Northumberland forrest in cobourg. about hr away from Durham region. Theres also Scugog Island, but its alot smaller than the Nonquon.

i think it great you guys are sharing all the info you,s know on crown land to hunt on:D :D
but as a word of caution.......if you plan on hunting any of these area,s..you are not sure of..
make sure you check for your selves that all is ok to hunt and what kind of restrictions are in place..such as shot gun only area,s/controled hunts/blah /blah/blah

I would totaly feel like a knob too if that happened but you should go back. Its not bad in there and its not like you were doing anything wrong. It must have been kinda funny to see that. What is wrong with some people????? :runaway:

Ohh I felt pretty embarrassed. I mean it was only a .22 but wife freaked out. I didn't know what else to do but leave. I know I was doing nothing wrong and that family was walking around in the forest where we were allowed to hunt but I just didn't feel right. What a waste of $50.
