Crownland Etiquette

Hi all!

I'm planning to do some bushwhacking in crownland near the Golden / Kootenays rockies area.

I'm going to be doing some camping & target shooting. In addition, since it's grizzly country, I'm planning to carry my rifle as a plan Z to supplement my bear spray & bear horn.

What's the etiquette around carrying a rifle if I run into anyone? (unlikely since I'll be deep in the bush)

What's the polite thing to do if someone happens to show up while I'm target shooting?

Welcome.
Sadly i don't recommend shooting on crown land anymore.
In most areas there's just too many people these days to do it safely and too many brainwashed clowns that will s hit their pants at the sight of a rifle in a person's possession.

Oh,that's easy. Leave it slung,don't aim it at anyone and you'll be good.

Yes, there's a high magnification optic on most rifles. Carry binoculars and leave the rifle slung.

I don't live in BC so my knowledge of local requirements is vague at best. In some provinces if there is an open game season, the fish cops will be more than a little suspicious of someone carrying a rifle without a valid game licence - even if you are only intending to shoot a targets. You might want to protect yourself with the necessary paperwork.

In Ontario,there's a demarcation line that runs from Lake Huron in the west to the Ottawa River in the east roughly in line with the southern boundary of Algonquin Park. There's no open season for any game north of that line from June 16 to Aug 15 (Sept 3 in southern WMU's) . Carrying of firearms is "prima facie" evidence of hunting unless demonstrably shooting targets in a controlled manner,either,at a bona fide range ot ptivate property (eg: gravel pit) with owner permission,in some cases,in writing.

Know the laws and restrictions on where you can and can't shoot, don't assume there is no one else in the bush, only target shoot with a good dirt backstop, don't make a mess,if you meet other back country users greet them as per normal and be prepared for obvious question with some pre canned replies to downplay and deescalate any possible Karen concerns.

If your within the law and being safe then there should be no issues, that said if someone is upset for some reason remain calm cool and collected.

If your shooting and someone approaches, cease firing , make safe and have a civil chat.
