Have to agree with canuckgunny. I use my 17hmr almost exclusively for crows, haven't used a shotty in ages on them.

Crow hunting is crazy around here this time of year, the crow gather here for the winter. We go from maybe 2-300 hundred throughout the summer to well over 10000 of the bastards in the winter.

The question assumes shotgun use, but I prefer my .204 with 32grn vmaxs. Limits the shots you can take due to safety, but extends the distance you can take them at. Not much is sweeter than watching a crow or magpie detonate.

I love shooting crows with varmint rifles as well. Safety issues important with birds in trees and on fence posts and such. High volume shoots never occure with rifles but the simple pleasure of smacking crows from hundreds of yards distant is very rewarding. Taking a dozen or so with a rifle is a good morning in my opinion, shooting the same with a shotgun is just a warm up.

I didn't realize we were supposed to DO anything with them... 'after'. I do know that I enjoy the company of increased numbers of field/song birds 'after' though. They are nothing short of murderers. Intelligent, yup, but so what. I usually spread them out where others can see them. Kind of a flashing neon sign for their kind that says 'Not Welcome'. If they are intelligent enough to leave... they can live. Most do.
Now magpies on the other hand......

2 3/4 12 ga. for me with 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 of 6 or 7.5 is plenty of medicine for a crow.
