Crusader arms backland

This wasn't a question of "finding the ammo it likes", I tested a few different loads including numerous 75gr match loads. The Alcor's level of precision (ie how tight it grouped) was acceptable at around 2moa, the issue was that the zero for the rifle would "walk"as the barrel warmed up. This wasn't an ammo issue but a rifle issue. This is most likely due to how the barrel is attached to the action/receiver (like a shotgun).
I had the same issues with an MRA Renegade with various ammos up to 75g Match, altho I didn't find 2-MOA "acceptable" when using a scope. And the 'walking' ran that up to 4MOA or worse when over 10-rounds or so. The problem 'went away' and was replaced by a Sav-12 in 308.

I can't speak to the Renegade as I've never shot/owned one but 2 moa for 10 rounds with match ammo is what most decent/acceptable (read not match grade) factory barrels will do on an AR-15 or similar carbine, a good one will do closer to 1.5 moa and a match barrel should keep it a 1 moa or less.

IMO the Renegade with a Wylde chamber had 'too much' of a jump due to the longer chamber. It allowed 5.56 Nato ammo to be used easily but I feel that reduced accuracy vs a .223 chamber. If I reloaded I prob could have got better accuracy. And my old Ruger Am-std in .223 is MOA or better.

So I borrowed a chum's Backland Hunter and took it to the range today. After 40 years of shooting one firearm or another, some in service to Her Majesty, many others for recreation, I will say that this is the worst rifle I have ever had the misfortune to use.

I couldn't get through a single magazine without the rifle failing -- it really doesn't like picking up that last round -- and working the action was like forcing a cat to get into a pet carrier. If that cat itself was armed. And with a rifle that was actually functional. Even when it did pick up a round, it would sometimes decide that feed ramps were optional and jam the round in awkwardly, not allowing the bolt to close.

After I got home, I called my friend and told him that whether or not the firearms lab declared this an AR-variant and prohibited it, if I were him I'd still turn it in, even for free. It would be better to not have this rifle than to use it.

I withdraw my previous comment: I would rather spend money on the used meat of a tired prostitute then what I optimistically believed was merely a subpar rifle.

If anyone from Crusader Arms is reading this: I'm ####ing appalled that you're cutting the hair of Canadian gun owners with the dog #### that is the Backland Hunter. Get that bag while you can though.

Man! I came here to potentially buy one.

Not anymore.

The mags need to be broken in as well as the gun. I am not a fan of the mags, the rounds fit in them too tight which I believe causes problems
I don’t think the mags come apart either so can’t even fix them
I did have issues with mine at first but nothing like what was said above
After around 50 rounds it is mostly reliable

Looking at Mag Empty's video on the matter, it would appear that the pin that holds the rat tail on the bolt is slightly off center, leading the firing pin to be less than free. His bolt carrier was a Gen 1 and that pin seems reasonably easy to take out. My BCG appears to be a later revision and that pin couldn't be removed by the Almighty.

So until I can figure something out, I can't remove that retaining pin and correct its orientation vis-à-vis the firing pin. Fixing that would at least correct the lazy bolt return.

I may bypass the OEM mags and modify the mag well to accept STANAG magazines. It appears I "merely" have to do is grind down a rib on one side that prevents actual functioning magazines to be accepted.

I doubt it's possible for me to hate this ####ing rifle any more than I do already. I did email CA with a not particularly polite, though tempered, letter to congratulate them on the manufacture of such a rifle. I doubt they'll attempt to make things right.

Sorry for the double posting but a mild update. CA responded to my email with a fairly reasonable email considering how close to rude I veered in mine. We went back and forth a few times and while I'm not convinced by some of their arguments concerning the scale of QC issues with their rifles, I will be sending the rifle to them for warranty work.

I'll be interested to see if this rifle can be made properly functioning.

Let us know how you make out with the warranty claim
Some people say that Crusaders customer service is beyond bad so will be interesting to hear your results with them
Hopefully they get you fixed up and back in action

Say what you want about Crusader but they’re G D crusaders… they won’t take ‘no’ for an answer and keep persevering.

How many Canadian companies, especially FIREARM companies, have said fukk it I’m gonna GTFO?

Hats off to them. I hope they sort their rifles out and sell a gazillion of them.
