Considering muzzle brake/flash arrestor hybrids for a Rem 700 in .223 Rem w 16.5-in heavy barrel factory threaded muzzle 5/8 x24

Interested in those that send noise downrange to not annoy other shooters or myself. Prefer to buy Canadian or in the case of the EFAB, from a Canadian.

Models under consideration from lowest price...

Where's the none of the above option?

I see no reason to use a janky setup with washers with the plethora of excellent self timing brakes available these days.

And why those particular options? Pretty odd choices for a bolt gun.

Was expecting your useless criticisms and not reading my reasons.

Neither know nor care what your problem is.

I choose to believe everybody has bad days and give them several chances, because I can learn from everyone, even if it's only what not to do. Guess I ought to have ignored you earlier.

That's awfully negative. I don't think those muzzle devices add any real benefit to a bolt gun. What's the purpose of flash suppression on your bolt gun? NV shooting? I'm genuinely curious.

If you don't want to bother your "neighbors", then just leave the muzzle bare, as is. None of those devices will do much to reduce recoil, and unless you are shooting at night, I can't see how flash suppression comes into play.

My personal preference is a crush washer. I tend to never/rarely take my muzzle devices off, unless swapping to a new barrel. They don't look pretty like a custom shouldered brake, but I've never had one come loose.

I picked up an Insite Heathen a month ago, one of the self timed brakes that kthomas recommends everywhere. Put 30 rounds through my new 6.5 manbun CTR, and when packing it up noticed the goddamned thing had loosened up. I had checked it after the first magazine, and it was tight, but it loosened off 20 rounds later which is unsettling.
It was initially tightened with a rubber strap wrench, but this time I put it in the vise and put a plastic pencil through the gills to tighten. Mine is a new version with the angled slots in the basically smooth jam nut, and the replaceable insert for different calibers.
I'm hoping that I don't need to use loctite on the damn thing, will be paying closer attention the next range visit.

For what it's worth, I always loctite and witness mark my muzzle brakes (and most things, to be honest). It's not necessarily needed but I don't see a downside and like the piece of mind.

Some thoughts. I've come to like the accu-washer. I lubricate muzzle threads with copper kote and use a wrench to tighten to maybe 30 ft lbs. Tight enough it won't come loose but not so tight as to be difficult to remove. I like the accuwasher over peel or shim types simply because I use one washer and can go up or down sizes until the device tightens to alignment with an acceptible amount of torque. Now regarding your choices I'm not seeing options I'd be inclined to choose for your application. Both the Aegis and the EFAB will increase blast to the side considerably as well as kick up dirt and dust when shooting prone. If you're wanting to reduce muzzle blast a bit the only real choice is a forward blow comp like the S&J linear comps, Levang, Dlask etc. If the ATRS provides compensation then I'm inclined to believe it increases blast as well. Even an A2 birdcage increases blast. A linear aka forward blow will reduce blast a small amount. Keep in mind that although blast shields mitigate side blast they also cancel the effects of the device. Unfortunately the one good perfect solution here is prohibited in Canada. Suppressors do it all. Sound, recoil and muzzle flash are all reduced. Hope this helps.

Self timing brakes are nice. You just have to use a wrench to get them right enough. I like mdt or insite.

To answer the original question: lock nut (as they are found on a self timing brake).

To agree with KThomas and RugbyDave: the Insite Heathen is a great brake (and so is the MDT Elite Muzzle Brake), and you should always loctite and witness mark your muzzle brakes/muzzle devices.

Thank you.

Totally agree on suppressors and that Kanukistan is frakked up for banning a safety device.

Re bolded: those two are top of my list because they have a strip when timed to prevent kicking up dust from 6 o'clock position, and supposedly do not send much blast out the sides.

See the vids of the EFAB in dark (wish SBI would post vids in the dark of the Aegis-30, because it's 33% of the EFAB price).

Indeed, in what other part of life are you banned from using additional PPE? Indeed in most instances Government mandates PPE above and beyond what is reasonable / safe, but not with firearms.

Why? Well my theory is that firearms being loud are often viewed as obnoxious and as our fascist overlords are trying very hard to follow the globalized agenda of disarming private citizens they cannot do anything that may make firearms less noisy / more acceptable to Joe Public.

Its not like such devices makes the gun whisper quiet as they are still loud enough with a suppressor, but it sure takes the rough edge. When you get your firearm knowledge by watching a few movies that show them as completely removing all noise then that must be how it is and verboten they must stay.
