Crushed Brass - Norinco 1911

Hey guys,

Was out at the range today, while picking up my brass I came across this:



What does this mean? Gun ran flawless today, only 300 rounds through the gun so far - is this normal?
 
If that was your gun you probably would have noticed.. That is from a jam. It didn't eject all the way, and the slide rammed it forward into the action before it was clear of the port. It happens to my buddy's norc all the time. I was thinking over powered spring, or maybe incorrect ejector length???

anyone else??

BTW.. to add to the mystery.. It happens less when he uses high quality mags for some reason..?
 
probably someone else's brass

as that crushed brass is when the slide catches the brass, you would have had to manually cleared it
 
I guess its possible it hit the front and got squeezed out, but you think you would have noticed something funny... I am 99.999 percent positive that case got rammed before it was clear of the ejection port. If it was 'virgin' brass you may be able to tell part of the story be finding the extractor mark and figuring out which way the case was chambered, and which area got mangled.. top, bottom, side?

Mine does it normally at the last round in the mag the gun fails to extract the shell and it gets caught in the extractor. I notice the extractors really loose on mine. Like I need to fit a different firing pin stop. I can wiggle my extractors around a bit.
 
My .45acp norc is doing the same thing. No jam, never. I got crushed cases at a rate of about 1 per 150 or so... I use marstar 15$ mags and norc 7 rounders, can this issue be mag related??
 
There's a difference between a crushed case and where the brass is actually torn. The case in the OP's picture was caught in a closing slide, resulting in the split brass at the case mouth.
 
I think it has more to do with the recoil spring.

as tight as the extractor can be, the extended ejector on a Nora would knock it loose easily. The slide is coming back a little too fast.

the damage on the brass is caused when the slide is locking back catching the brass between the ejection port and barrel hood, if it didn't get caught causing you to clear the jam, it probably just shot off to the side when the slide locked back in.
 
When I started shooting a norc, I started finding at least one case like that per session. After I sold my norc I've not seen one since.

Range is indoors. I scrounge up any brass before I shoot (and it's *rare* to find 45ACP laying around with all of the scavengers there), plus I use those russian primers, so I'm dead nuts certain they were mine.

Same thing - gun ran fine, save for not locking open with some mags. No jams - just the odd case on the ground that had been hammered across the mouth, rendering it junk.

I had it happen with one of my 1911's. It did not cause jams, and i was the only one firing at an indoor range. It was definitely my brass. I didn't notice the odd crushed case while shooting, it was only on inspection when picking it up after the session. I tweaked my extractor and put in heavier recoil and main springs and the problem went away.

Just out of curiosity, this only happened with warm-hot loads.
