A friend turned up one of these new 'minimalist' means of range carry and says it works quite well, inside the home at least, he hasn't taken it to the range yet. I've seen the things in the same store but they don't have even a dummy Glock to try one out. Seems like a good idea, advertised as versatile for all types of carry across the Glock 17, 19, 22, and 23 models but has anyone here actually used one IPSC style?

This style has been around for a while but they were made by some of the "cheaper" holster companies, Fobus IIRC. Interesting idea but personally I would stick with a traditional light bearing holster.

The holster acts like a clam shell. Insted of the pistol going into the holster from the top, muzzle first, it gos in from the side. Then the "cover" folds around it. To draw, you depress the ridged tab below the trigger guard and the clam shell opens.
At least thats how the ebay el cheapo one I had back in the day worked. This one looks like it functions the same.

It could be a solution if you need a Glock holster for use with nonstandard lights, or with a suppressor mounted.

OP: I'm no expert, but I don't think it would be permitted for IPSC (or for ranges that require the muzzle to be covered). It's a 10-year old concept that apparently never went anywhere. I don't care for the retention, personally.

It's meant for pistols mounting a suppressor. If you don't have a suppressor, there are much better options.

About the only other reason would be as a "universal" Glock holster for any Glock regardless of barrel/slide length or light mounted.

Actually, now I want one. What store did you see it at?

911 Supply out of Calgary.

that is even dumber that a Serpa holster. very easy to stop a gun from coming out of that holster, when it is needed, which is the exact opposite of what you want in a holster.
