The Unboxing... 2014/09/02...
In the fairness of full disclosure, I opened it and checked it out, then went back and took photos.
As an added bonus the two magazines I ordered from Corwin-Arms also showed up, so a little side by side of the Corwin surplus vs the CSA "as-new" mags is at the end. Not much difference between the two save for the method the rivet job was done. Both methods don't look out of place though and appear to function fine. Range session to follow.
Good solid carrying case... Non-descript.
Everything is kind of loose inside though. When the lid is closed it is secure by the pressure from the foam, but make sure the box is flat when you open it. Inside you will find the vz61, the short mag inserted, a CD, warranty card and cleaning brush. The two long mags are in the nylon pouch. The inside of the pouch has two pockets so the mags won't rub together.
Markings on the gun... Not pictured is the complete serial number. Upper and lowers are serialized matching.
Mag well...
Rear sights are adjustable between 75 and 150. Feet? Yards? Haven't quite figured it out yet haha. My guess, feet.
Internals...
Trigger mechanism...
Upper receiver with bolt carrier...
Rear to front through the receiver, BCG removed...
Charging.... nubs? Grips???
Bolt carrier group...
And magazines... CSA on left, Corwin Arms surplus on right...
The First Range Trip... 2014/09/09...
So I managed to make it out to the indoor range today. I had planned on the outdoor, but it snowed yesterday here. Ya, in September. Impressive.
Anyways... I had 100 rounds of Winchester white box 71gr FMJ, and 100 rounds of Sellier and Bellot 73gr FMJ. I was using the stock 5/10 and 2 5/20 CSA mags, and 2 Corwin Arms surplus 5/20 mags.
I shot at ranges of 5 meters, and 10 meters. This is 32acp after all. I wasn't looking to push it too far out there haha.
This was at 5m, with the stock folded and shooting basically in a pistol type grip. 5 rounds of Winchester. The X ring is 1 1/2 inches top to bottom.
And the first 5 with 20 rounds more.
This was at 5m, with the stock folded and shooting basically in a pistol type grip. 5 rounds of S&B. Same target, just aiming for the 8 above the X ring.
And the first 5 with 20 rounds more.
I moved the target out to 10 meters and shot 5 rounds of S&B with the stock extended and the rifle shouldered.
First 5...
And then another 25 shots at the bottom 7. Prior to this everything was standing. This 25 I shot elbows on the bench at 10m.
Results:
Ammo: The gun hated the Winchester white box. 1 to 2 fail to feeds per mag on racking the new mag and on general firing and cycling. I gave up after 50 round of Winchester and moved on to the S&B hoping a different ammo would have different results. A man did it ever. 100 rounds of S&B and not one stoppage. This gun loves S&B ammo and I probably won't use anything else. The S&B was more accurate than the Winchester (when it fired) and came in almost at half the price compared to the Winchester. After I shot the last of the S&B, I fired off the rest of the Winchester. The stoppages lessened by the last few rounds, but it was still one stoppage per mag minimum with the Winchester stuff. I wouldn't recommend the Winchester white box at all. Maybe over time the gun may break in more and eat it. But not right now. For the price difference though, I don't see the point in even trying to force the issue.
Ammo conclusion:
Winchester White Box 32acp 71gr = $37.00 a box and tons of stoppages
Sellier & Bellot 32acp 73gr = $22.00 a box and no stoppages
Mags. With the S&B ammo both the surplus and CSA mags ran the same. The surplus mags are pinned a little tight, and won't insert on a closed chamber. The CSA mags will. Winchester stoppages were not mag related as stoppages were even in both mags.
Sights. The gun has good iron sights when shooting it like a pistol. When using it like a rifle, shouldered, the rear sight is almost a total blur when focussing on the front sight. Takes some getting used to. I only fired on the 75m setting, and completely forgot it has a 150m setting. I think the 150m might be a TAD optimistic on the design side, and the capabilities of the round and short barrel/sight picture.
Overall, with the S&B ammo this gun was a blast to shoot and very reliable. Go figure, Czech gun eats Czech ammo better. I shot a couple of mag dumps and the rounds were all on target, and the first empty shell casing was hitting the ground after the fifth shot.
Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Tink Tink Tink Tink Tink.
