Just wondering if anyone has any practical experience with the above AR stocks.

Wondering about performance, mostly target shooting and some planned "course" use.

As well, is the SOPMOD worth it for 'sporting' setup?

Yes, I did a search but didn't find a whole lot of what I'm looking for.

No one I know has experience with these ones either (I guess I don't know enough ppl yet).

Thanks.

Although I don't have a SOPMOD stock, I do have a CTR and a VLTOR Modstock. What I found with the VLTOR (and I make this comparison based on it having a similar profile to the SOPMOD) is that the cheek weld it's angles forced me into didn't suit my shooting style. The CTR on the other hand I like as it's a narrow profile, I like the friction lock, and I really love the optional rubber butt pad. I mention the butt pad since, unlike many out there, it is screwed on so it won't fall off or require a zap strap to hold on, and it's material provides a really nice grip of the butt into my body, no matter what I may be wearing.
I know over on AR15.com there is a comparison thread on the various butts available that is quite informative and you might want to check it out.

ETA: the best solution is to link up with some shooters who can let you try both. And you're in Alberta! That should be easy!:)

I have a SOPMOD, and held a CTR. If you want a nice cheek weld then the SOPMOD is the best I have ever had. The CTR isn't bad for it and locks up right tight when put into a locked position. You won't go wrong with either one, but in my .02 world, the SOPMOD is the more comfortable of the 2.

I have tried a sopmod and didn't care for the cheek weld -I'm glad I tried it before buying.
I have a CTR on my carbine and like it a lot.

SOPMOD is more comfortable in my experience, better cheekweld and the extra length gives you more room for adjustment. Plus, you get an airtight battery/storage compartment.

Thanks all.

Guess I'll have to make more friends down at the range.

For now, maybe I'll just stick with the basic stock then upgrade when the time comes.

If you can find one, the M93B Magpul is awesome - bit of a pain to install, but it is rock solid and I find the cheek weld is perfect for me. I have a green one on my carbine, and I feel it is one of the best stocks out there.

I found the foot print of the sopmod too big on the shoulder, depending on your clothing style. Also, the Sopmod is longer than the CTR - I use the Sopmod fullyclosed when I am wearing heavy clothing.

guess there's nothing like actually trying out the item in question.

I'll have to pop down to P&D and see what they have for comparisions.

Thanks again all.

It comes down to the Sopmod or the CTR for me as well. I ended up buying a CTR. I just like the looks better :D

Thanks for the practical feedback.

Can't wait until the holidays are over.

Been doing lots of reading on the various forums now and am just itching to buy.....

need to get rid of this black rifle longing...

I've got both, SOPMOD is the better built and more comfortable stock. I'm in the process of slowly changing all my rifles over to the SOPMOD.

I've got the SOPMOD on both my 6920's. I tried a CTR at a course, and although I thought it was well made, it didn't suit my purpose - I want the battery storage for my SF M900 and M962c, I personally think the cheek weld is much better on the SOPMOD, as well as the extra length is perfect for me with the stock all the way in. Something that hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet, is that the SOPMOD comes stock (pardon the pun) with a rubber butt pad that doesn't need to be held on with zap straps and doesn't slide around on nylon gear.

that sounds like a good point.

while I'm looking at trying a "tactical" build, my only real use (unless all ---- breaks loose) will be down at the range.

Sopmod...

so...got my LMT from Mark at Questar today...

and went with the SOMOD stock....very good fit for me and I like the little extra "heft" it gives to the back end.

now to re-read those posts regarding mounting a sling point on it.

I have all the above -- plus the VLTOR E-MOD and Magpul UBR.

I gave away my Crane SOPMOD I had on my rifle in Iraq since I dont like the design while shooting in armour and helmet.

VLTOR gave me an E-MOD to try out
URX019.jpg

It has much the same geometry of the CRANE (and now built by LMT stock) in the cheek area but and improved rear face.
I'm pretty happy with it -- but still have CTR's for the majority of my guns.
