Donny Fenn1, with certain regularity, grizzlies as well as cougars kills people around Banff and Canmore. Usually, it's the last meal for these critters, since there is, like most places, a unwritten law that says, that there is dead sentence for bears and cougars that kills people.
However, these critters are suspected to be illiterate, and do not know that we human have a unwritten law and dead sentence against them, when they do react in a manner of what is natural to them, and there will therefore, unfortunately, in the future, be more people killed by predatory wildlife in western canadian national parks.
So far I know, no people have yet been killed by aggressive bull elk, but there have in the past been some serious injuries reported from elk attacks in Banff/Canmore areas.

-i'm a nitpicker, the article mentions a black bear attack and a grizzly mauling in the park(Banff)....the killing was near Canmore which is outside of the park near Canmore and outside of the fence so NOT in Banff...
-cougar attacks? yep but not mentioned in the original post
-so not with certain regularity are people killed by grizzlys in Banff National Park....
-and as for the death sentence the animal is doing what it is supposed to i say let it be myself...don't wear headphones when you bike and x-c ski and pay attention...

You're definitely splitting hairs. Canmore/Banff are separate but basically the same in my book. I don't really see what the importance is whether an attack happens 10 km inside or outside the actual Banff fence line, but hey I guess you're right.
I do feel people are nuts to go running/biking alone on trails that have bears on them, but if one does attack a person it needs to be taken out IMO.
As know to us hunters, as soon as our prey animals know they the hunting season is on, they have a habbit of activating their cloaking device and disappearing out of sight.
Would therefore a limitied and controlled hunt in and around populated areas in canadian western parks (Disneyland-North) reduce tragic dead of people ?

I spend alot of time in banff and when you see all the animal heads and old black and white pictures of hunting/fishing, it makes you wonder where it all went wrong.
I've lived in the Parks for years, and the animals are doing what animals do. They Rut, and they protect thier mates. When they live in proximity to people long enough, they usually learn to live with us (in a park or otherwise). We seldom learn to live with them as effectively however, and unfortunately most folks would rather risk this type of encounter than invest in a better zoom lens for thier camera.
I was dissappointed when they fenced Banff, as it took a lot of the atmosphere away from the community. However it was another shining example of how we have to fence in the visitors, to protect the wildlife. Animals are animals, we generally know what to expect from them. If you encounter a large bear/moose/bull elk unarmed in the woods, you give them room and leave beacuse you know the danger. Yet when they roam into town because our lawns, gardens, and fruit trees are green and ripe like a christmas buffet, or worse yet, the tourists are feeding them like Odie and Garfield, we expect the animals to know the "rules".
Once again, we tend to be the ones most often exhibiting the stupid behavior.
