Culling The Herd

There comes a time when one wonders what the single most versatile pistol is. I am nearing retirement and I want to be debt free when it occurs. I am used to a large collection and I intend to cull the herd. A minimalist list is also of benefit to those just starting to collect or on a limited budget.

I know that I will never be able to live without a 1911, Browning High-Power, or one of my CZs with the Kadet 22 Conversion unit. My do all pistol will become my Glock 23 (G23). Why choose the G23? I will be shoot 40 S&W, 357 Sig, and 9mm because I have conversion barrels in those calibres. This list also includes my Glock 21 as I can shoot 45acp and 10mm rounds in it.

Along with these pistols, I intend to keep some pistols of little value that I know work. What are these bargain basement pistols? I have a $135 4” Ruger MK I , Bersa Thunder .380 and 45acp that cost me $200 each, one of my Makarovs, and lastly, my Star BM.

What are your thoughts on this subject, my picks, or what would you keep from your collection?

Regards,

Richard :D

bare mininum

I also had a few guns that I didn't use, add to that my home renovations and kids education, well some had to go to pay the expenses. I think I have come down to a bare mininum (for now) of handguns that I believe are practical and useful.
Springfield 1911 Mil-spec. like you, a 45 is a must for any shooter or collector and the 1911 is by far my favorite in that caliber.
Glock 17, my favorite 9mm that does it all, plinker, competition and just plain fun to shoot.
Colt Cobra 2"' 38 Spl. I was always a sucker for snubs and had more snubs in my collection than anything else. now I only have the Colt. Gotta have a snub, even though I don't shoot it often.
S&W Model 3914 9mm This a gun that I don't shoot often and many times thought of selling , but I can't bring myself to do it. Small, light, powerful and extremely accurate, this is the perfect gun for CCW which obviously in Canada is not an issue, but a real shooter at the range, and did I mention ACCURATE.
Finally, what I'm missing to complete my "perfect collection" is of course another revolver, a 4" 357. I believe the 4" 357 is the perfect revolver, great balance, powerful and accurate. I've bought and sold many 4" magnums and vowed never to sell it again, but I've never learned my lesson and here I am again without a magnum.

TSE has one for sale

I went through the same exercise when I decided to quit collecting Smith & Wessons and Military to concentrate on Savage 99's.

I am more traditional in my keepers: Browning Hi-power 9mm; Colt 1911 9mm, Ruger MK II target; 624 6"; 24 4", 586 4", 686 6", Smith 651 (convertable 22 rf and .22 mag) 4"; Smith 631 4" (32 mag). Also kept a Lee Enfield No. 4, MK II, a Jungle Carbine and a Mauser K98 in 7.62x51.

Hi Richard

I have not seen in your posts if you own one, but a P7 M8/13 would be a must have on a "limited" collection. I'm not sure if you carry, but this would be my choice if I was so entrusted to have that right.

Very hard for me to do. Every time I sell a firearm there is always regret. But one has to move 'forward', I suppose??? :( I'm currently in the culling process. It's been very slow going as I've only sold two firearms this year and in the process of selling another. I've decided that I'm going to keep the calibres I currently reload for with the exceptions being my rimfire firearms and shotgun. Now decisions have to be made as to which guns to keep that I do reload for...:runaway:

Wow, great minds must think alike...re: time to cull...
Absolute essentials...
1911 45ACP, S&W586 5", 629 5", CZ85B with Kadet (22LR)top end, G19..my
'go to' gun, Steyr Scout (308Win.), Marlin levers (.357 and .44 'natch to go with the wheelguns), Anshutz(Savage!) 22LR bolt, Black Special, Fabarm 14" 12GA.
I reload for everthing I own, except for rimfire and shotgun, and have 'ample'
supplies of loaded ammo + components (bullets, cases, primers and powder)
for each unit...should be 'go to go'...for awhile anyway!;)

DS,

Do you want your GP100 back? :p

Jeff.

Richard, with the amount of handguns that you have, "culling the herd" could allow you to retire early.:dancingbanana:

Lionhill, the problem with the P7 M8/13 pistol is you need to develop rote skills to safely carry one. I would prefer to avoid developing another set of memorized skills. Lastly, I am culling the herd and not buying breeding stock:D Regards, Richard :D

In that case I'd keep the Ruger Mk I. You have most of my favourite pistols covered. Except the P7. Fine breeding stock indeed.
