Curiosity - polarized opinions on Glocks?

Hey!

So I have a question.... I am very new to shooting sports and I have been borrowing a G-17 for IDPA. The general comments about it range anywhere from it's "garbage" to "I'd rather throw it at the target".

I'm just wondering why? From things I've read on here they seem to be a reliable choice.

I quite like it and it is the front runner for my first purchase. But like anything else - when there are so many dissenters I start to question why.

Thanks so much!

No one really questions Glock quality. Many don't like plastic guns, the ergonomics are not for everyone and it gets a bad rap for being the gun all the gangsta kiddies rap about.

Also there is the law of human nature that when some people like something too much, other people have to tear it down!

Having said all that I owned a glock and found it to be an accurate and reliable piece of leggo that I could not wait to get rid of. So they are not for everyone!

It's fashionable in some circles to bash GLOCKs. I'm a 1911 fan, but I have absolutely nothing against GLOCKs, have enjoyed shooting them, and might eventually wind up buying oe someday. They're tough, reliable guns and great bang for the buck.

I used to like Berettas, but now I've converted to Glock 17 and 1911 in .45.

Both are essential to me to have a perfect balance in life.

Glocks are very decent guns, but some people and places hype them far to much, encouraging a backlash. Personally I hate the triggers on them. I own a G26 but would sell it if I could get a SW M&Pc.

I shoot a 2011, but I also own 2 Glocks as well (22 & 35) love them.

I shoot better with the 2011, but the great thing about Glocks is that there is a huge selection of aftermarket accessories for it, and working on Glocks is so easy to do do.

Colin is right. Glocks are very good, but the way some Glock cultmembers rave about them can become tiresome and provoke some naysaying just for the sake of it.

i'm kinda split on them. from the few that i've had a chance to shoot, i like how they felt in the hand (for the most part), the G34 had GREAT controls and a good trigger, but i didn't like the G17 / G21 triggers all that much. i like that they're not horribly expensive, they look ok (kinda drab, but at least not gaudy or overdone, simple and plain yet uninteresting), the stock sights are very easy to use, and they seem to have a huge aftermarket support. i suppose the only thing i don't really like about them is how they seem to shudder when the round fires - they tend to have this weird "sproing!" to them. they evidently are reliable, though, despite feeling like they're about to spring apart in your hand.

would i buy one? hmm, probably. not sure if i'd go with a normal one (G17 / G22) or the more competition oriented ones (G34 / G35). i'd PROBABLY end up going normal and then adding the extended controls and lighter trigger.

I own a 34 and love it. Also own a couple of 1911's & love them too, wheel guns as well.
If the Glock 17 fits good & shoots well for you, show the nay sayer's with your improved scores. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Glock & intended design. Some guys don't like the frame. Other guy's don't like the trigger. Some don't like the factory barrel, on & on it goes. It's a dirt simple design, that's ugly but works!

I had to sell either my Glock 19 or my Colt 1911 to pay some unexpected bills.

To my total disbelief I sold the Colt!

I know the Glock will work and it's pretty accurate as well. It doesn't feel as good in my hand as a 1911 but I shoot better with it, so what does that mean?
This coming from an old 1911 fan.

Now NAA will give me another infraction for selling the Colt!:p

Not really, how big were the bills? A colt 1911 will always fetch more than a Glock. So using that logic, you only had to sell one gun instead of possibly selling two...;)

If he can shoot a Glock well, anyone can:

I think it's mostly a reaction to a brand/hype thing mixed in with hollywood b/s and urban myth. I get a bad taste in my mouth whenever one of my non shooting buddies says "if I got a gun it would be a Glock". I know it's not because the gun is right for them, but because of the myth/coolness factor that comes with it. I just smile and say "Glocks are cool" and then follow up with a "we should go shooting this weekend".

That being said, they are good guns, if they weren't then people wouldn't want them, and law/military wouldn't use them. They have their quirks just like any other firearm, and if those quirks work for you then it's all just a matter of personal preference.

As to why people bad mouth them? I have no idea, it's a common thing for guys to do this on every subject imaginable.

glocks seem to get as much love as desert eagles.

personally, i'd have no problems owning both.

I have two STIs (Eagle in 45 and Trojan in 40), a colt 1911 (38 super) and a glock 22 with a 357 sig barrel. I love the look and feel of my 2011/1911 guns and they all cost more than the glock. But invariably when I open the safe on Sunday to go to the match it’s the glock that gets the nod. I simply shoot it faster then my 1911s.

I think you can make the argument that some may not find them attractive but I don’t think anyone can make a reasoned argument that they don’t work or aren’t accurate. I have started two friend shooting in the last year, both decided on glock (17 for one, 22 of the other) for their first (and maybe only) pistol.

I personally love my Glocks. I've owned a ton of other autos, but as a lefty, I find the Glock the simplest to use. Every time I pull the trigger on either my G17 or my G34, they go bang without fail. Uber-reliable and they work for me, but it seems you either love 'em or hate 'em.

I love my 22. The fact that you don't have to baby it nearly as much as some other pistols makes me love it even more.

you use factory ammo or reloads? if reloads, any worries or concerns?
