Curious about the 25/06

A while back I started a thread about getting a new rifle and asked for cartridge suggestions. Many people suggested a 25/06 to go along with my 300WM. I'd be using it sparingly for varmints and mainly for whitetails and mulies.

So, shooting out to 350yds max and using 120gr Partitions, would shot selection be limited? Another way, would a shoulder shot or raking shot at close range or long range be questionable with this cartridge/bullet combo?

I'm just curious because I've read and heard many diverse opinions regarding shot placement with .243 caliber bullets on deer. And a .257 isn't exactly a big step up.

Thanks! :)

25 cal might be a small step, but it *is* a step up. Launch a premium 120 grain bullet at 3000+ fps and it has much more bone breaking ability than a 100 gr @ 3000 fps in a 6mm.

120 grain Partition @ 3100 fps, I wouldnt think twice about taking a shot on a deer out to 400 yards, assuming the rifle and I were accurate/stable, and I felt good about the shot. If you load the 100 gr Triple Shock, penetration will be of no concern, even through shoulder bones.

I think the main difference is the heavier bullets with better S/D availabler the 25-06 over the .243. Not a huge leap as you state but still an important factor.
You could theoretically make the same argument all the way up the caliber chart....and end up at the 30cal magnums.
Your absolutely right about your shot placement becoming more critical with lighter calibers/bullets.
Is the .257 enough for mulies?... yeah... should you pick your shots?... hell yeah!

The 25 06 will drop em at 300+ yards so quick that you will not be recovered from the shot and see em fall. Keep an eye on your target cause it'll be on the ground real quick, and then you'll have to hunt for it. It is a giant step up from the 243. The 120 grain speer hotcore is a super bullet for the 25 06. I load them for a buddie and he uses them for moose and elk. It's as simple as " bang flop"

Well, that certainly answers the question and is basically what I wanted to hear. ;) Just a matter of choosing a rifle which will be a lot of fun (Kimber and Sako are the only two I'm considering right now).

I never even considered a 25/06 a month ago but it seems to have many fans.

BIGREDD- Pick your shots? I wouldn't take a south end shot at a north bound whitetail but what do you suggest avoiding? (I hope I'm not reading too much into your comment.)

On deer size game not much seperates the 25/06 from the .270 Win. No one I know questions the .270 on deer, they are both very effective deer rounds. For larger stuff, moose etc., the edge goes to the .270 IMO. But for deer and down the quarter bore is better, again IMO.

I already told you 'Get the 25/06.' :) I love mine.

If you get one try the 75 Grn. V-max for varmints, yotes and plinking. I'm hooked on them, cheap, fast and very accurate........... they make me smile.:)

For deer I like the 110 Grn. Accubond, although I can't get it to shoot that well from my gun. I've been meaning to give the Barnes TSX a try.

No nothing suggestive ... you had mentioned the raking shot and so forth.
Lets face it, it is a good idea to pick your shots with any caliber.
I am a fan of the .257 110 Accubond as well and it would definitely do a job on large deer out to 300+ yards.
I am getting 3200fps out of them from the 25WSSM 24" barrel and the accuracy is outstanding.

LBL, those 75gr pills must have some zip! :) That's another priority next year...reloading. 'Til then it's factory fodder only. I like Interbonds but it looks like Hornady doesn't load them for the 25-06...can't even buy them as components; only SST's. I've used SST's on deer in my 300 and they're pretty explosive.

BIGREDD, thanks for elaborating. I figured you were just making a general comment.

there is currently no 25 caliber Interbond, although Im sure within a year or two they will come out with a 117 gr version and probably later a 100 gr. (unless its a X bullet, I like the heavier 25 cal bullets for hunting, with the exception of the 110 gr Nosler Accubond).

PS I got the 75 gr Vmax going 3660 fps out of the 25-06 I load for :D (Weatherby MkV UltraLightweight 24"). In a 25-284 I had, they did the same speed. :ar15:

Yup, the 75 V-max are moving right along, I don't have a chronograph yet so am not sure the exact velocity. Should be around 3600 + fps, similar to Bartell's experience.

Zeroed for +1" at 100 yds, just 3.5" low at 300. Now that's flat...........

As for reloading, yeah, do it.:) It really adds to the whole shooting experience. Don't kid yourself though, you won't save a dime, it will end up costing you.;)
