Curious to know why terminology for antler's is different between different region's of the country. In most of North America a deer, elk etc with lets say for example 4 points on one side and 3 on the other is known as a 7 point but in many regions, primarily the west it would be known as a 4 x 3. Where does the different terminology for these two ways of counting points on antler's originate?

No idea. If a deer has ten points I call it a ten pointer. I dont call it a 5x5 or a 5 pointer.

I have heard the original settlers were not English speaking in the west.When they talked about antlers it was easier to say it in numbers per side like in the old country!

That's close but not entirely true. Most of us can count all the way to ten on our fingers but can't add the two sides together. It seems dumb to have a system that leaves out the big deer.
Perhaps you can help though; how many points is this one? I'm tired of changeing the subject when those wise men from the east ask.

That's what I sometimes say, but it seems so unmodest. Usually I just mumble "I dunno" and shuffle off looking for a grass stem to chew. Guessing wrong would be even worse.

In some places they do. That one I could never understand, unless the socialists are behind it.

Many mule deer I have shot didn't have any brow tines, so in that vein, it is better to exclude them.
Since I live in BC,, I have always counted each side separately [ i.e 4x4, 3x2, 6x5, etc]
Eastern counts do not confuse me, I just take it as a "quirk" of the eastern mindset, lol.
However they may be counted, a Whitetail over 160 B&C net points or a muley over 190 B&C always gets my attention.
