I recently purchased a used SPS barreled action of recent manufacture on the EE and was surprised to see a marked improvement in the finish over the older SPS 223 (action only) that I have here to compare it to. Seller assured me it was an SPS.

The finish is a finer matte and not nearly as rough as the older style. I like it!

Anyone else notice this?

Yup. My latest SPS Varmint rifle I purchased had a noticeably nicer finish. My older one was rough and dull from day one. Only time will tell how durable it is though.

A few years ago I was looking for a 223 barrel, SPS was fine in 24" model to re-barrel my 22-250 into a 1 in 12 twist.
Got the barrel and never even looked at it. Sent it to guntech and he advised it was 26" and a higher class of finish over the SPS.
It is definitely a better than SPS barrel

Probably went with a softer bead blast, & they black oxide everything it seems.
I have 2 of the short 16.5" SPS and I can wipe them down with a rag and not have pieces left behind lol. They are 4-5 years old though. Had an Express 870 that was terribly rough, major sandblast or something, finish was like a cheese grater.
Newer 700 Long Range that is also fairly smooth finished.

I have had 2 sps rifles of the older blued finish, seemed like they attracted rust as soon as a cloud appeared. They both shot good and handled well, I sold them both as I got bored of them and went on to the next project. I have been eyeing up a stainless sps a little bit lately, might have to pick another one up.

Same thing happened to the 870 Express. They had this dull rough grey finish but the new ones today have a more finer looking matte black finish.
