current Marlin quality?

I was in your boots a couple of months ago, even posted a thread here too.

I gave it an honest try, I went to dozens of stores and tried the Marlins, hoping to find a new one. Nope.

Went to Cabela's and fondled this year's production of a new 336. Just like last year, the action was rough, the rear sight not aligned and the wood sloppily cut and not matching the receiver shape. I could not believe though just how much binding and resistance I felt when cycling it.

Beside it, I held a Henry H009. The action was much smoother, sights were aligned and wood matched the receiver. It had a heavy barrel profile and weighed noticeably more. It was also a tube load (like the 22's) rather than the side port loading gate. It was also $100 more in price.

Also, I fondled the Mossberg 464. It was ok, but the action was "loose", like a well worn in rifle. Sights were also aligned nicely. It was about $50 cheaper than the Marlin.

I had to do it...I bought the Henry. Sorry Marlin, if I wanted cheap, poor quality, I'd have bought ... I dunno, can't think of any other rifle which has fallen so fast as even the Cheaper Mossberg action was much smoother.

I will post pics and range results when I take it out.

Crying shame how badly that company has been destroyed. Whoever sold out to the Remington conglomerate should be ashamed of himself. They would've been better off to close the doors than produce the trash they are now. Most of the rifles I've seen would've been better off having the steel used to make cheap chinese wrenches or sockets to be sold at princess auto

Yes its pretty discouraging. I wish I would have bought one years ago but they also didnt have the SBL back then. Guess I will wait it out and see if things start to turn around. Fingers crossed.

Unfxckingbelievable, Russell has resorted to private messaging me as a clown to continue his personal anti-marlin crusade.

You may need meds, your a tad obsessed.

If GTRussell is sending you guys PM's harassing you please make sure you report them so we can have documentation. Makes it easier to get rid of him in the end.

I just received my 2008 Marlin in 308 Marlin Express. My first impressions are that the fit and finish aren't perfect, but they are quite good. I see no issues with misaligned sights, or any other obvious defects. The action is actually quite smooth, and although the trigger is a little heavy, it isn't rough or gritty. The real test will come this weekend when I test fire the rifle.

I shot the rifle over the weekend, and the most accurate load produced a 1-1/2" six shot group.(two three shot groups fired at the same target, with the barrel allowed to cool in between)

Having fired several more groups on Sunday, my 308MX is averaging right around 1" at 100 yards for three shot groups. The action has become very smooth, and it feeds well from the magazine. The heavy trigger pull is my biggest issue with the rifle.

I have a new production 2012 1895 SBL and it is fine functionally and accuracy wise. Cosmetically it's not a tragedy either.

I heard all the bad new about them before I bought it but when I held it, cycled it and inspects it for nearly 2 hours I was sold.

Taken it to the range twice and I don't regret buying it even slightly.

Almost 100 rounds through it and not a single problem. Cycling slow, fast... doesn't seem to matter. Lever Evolution Ammo, lead cast handloads... everything works fine.

I tried a rossi '92 .454 and a Winchester in .357 and the Marlin's Action seemed just as smooth.

Some day I bring the thing out and cycle it just for fun.

I think this is one of those deals where there's lemons, and there's good ones, but the only way to be sure is to handle and play with one, make sure it's a good unit. This can apply to a few other guns as well. I bought a brand new Rem 700 BDL a while back, mail order from a dealer, had many 700's over the years, never had any real problems. Until this darn thing showed up. Brand new rifle would not extract a thing. Snap cap, dummy ammo, real ammo, nadda!

A trip to the post office, and 2 months later, that was fixed, but what a bloody hassle that was.

Pardon the pun, but guns are like women. Play with them a bit first to see if you like 'em.
(now to go get my kevlar on, I can hear guns a loadin'!)

Here's what my 450Marlin did the last time out. I guess it's ok for GARBAGE. There's lots of other companies out there that are production cheap sub-par products. No plastic parts on my Marlin :D
