A buddy e-mailed me a link to a report from a Special purpose police unit training exercise in Kurgan district of Russia in December of 2010.

http://onepamop.livejournal.com/799082.html

In Russian, but photos speak for themselves.

Lots of drool-worthy photos of the current equipment in use. Of course lots of AK variants of all kinds, PKM, some Makarov and Yarigin pistols, PG6 RPG launcher, RPG-7, current fragment-less flash-bangs, including a nice shot of one going off in a building, smoke grenades, new 9A-91 SMG. Lots of good close-ups of current equipment.

One of the things that the article mentions is that for the night time winter exercises in the forested area, they found out that white pants and usual dark top with the ideal combination, that hid wearer both in the light and in the darkness.

Any way, hopefully interesting to folks.

I found it interesting that these guys use Vortex Sparc sights (as opposed to, say, EOtech).

Apparently the weather was crappy the first few days, snow with a layer of ice on top, so after walking in the forest the shins would hurt. So no shin guards.

Because of the weather deer were sticking to the roads too, which is what that photo is all about (in case someone thought that spetsnaz were out poaching).

Knocking down a tree across the road was a surprise interdiction or surprise terrorist attack exercise. Were they using real ammo instead of blanks, everyone in a van would have been killed as they were getting out.

The flash hiders/breaks on the AK are custom work they commissioned to someone, and are testing out.

Their equipment are pretty crude compared to the Western standard. I am not sure how one can keep their situation awareness and hearing in one of those helmets.

Lots of raw firing power that are more suitable for the military - but not sure they got the precision to be a "police" commando. Perhaps they are Ministry of Interior troops?

Crap, sorry, forget what westerners think of the word "spetsnaz".

Spetsnaz literally means "special purpose". These folks are OMSN of Kurgan District. OMSN can be translated as "Department of special purpose police forces" (SN in the acronym is the spetsnaz). So yeah, Ministery of Interior.

Keep in mind, however, that majority of these folks fought in the Chechen war. Doesn't make them enlisted military per se, but doesn't make them incompetent either.

Standard equipment are ZSh-1 helmets and "Korund" body armor (5th level of protection, although I am not clear how that maps to western standards)

Regarding the mismatch of the equipment. Basically, employer doesn't provide enough equipment, so they wear to the exercises what they can and what they don't mind ripping or damaging.

There are actually a type of SWAT thing there there are under Ministry of Interior Affairs in the police("milicia") but not under command of Interior troops with have there own "specnaz" units, in general "specnaz" means special unit which even can a firefight department and to tell all it's an acronym that officially is not in use on papers. And Greentips your being completely right about military equipment - and the reason being alot of those units get rotated to Caucasus mosty in Chechnia and Dagestan, especially after army was officially withdrawn form "constitutional order restoration" in 2005. It is still a guerrilla warfare present there so i guess they have to adjust to situation, and sadly AK being a side arm doesn't become a joke =(

Sorry for the rehearsal, didn't see Notbsd's explanation

I see at least one VSS there too. What's the very large, long brass?

no it's almost the same as AK i believe they even build it on the same equipment as 7.62x39 to save on production

"Special" Forces?

Here is a list of the sniper firearms officially approved for use by the ministry of interior troops. Keep in mind that the unit would have a subset of these, depending on how "rich" the unit is.

List is in Russian (which I left in place so it's easier to search for), translation to English is mine, so probably incorrect.

ESQ, glad you had a laugh. Personally, I find this set of photos an interesting illustration how the people are more important then equipment. You can be as well dressed as any mall ninja and know nothing, and you can be skilled, and make do with crappy equipment. Ideally you want both equipment and skill, and good equipment will cover up for lack of skill, but don't underestimate the human factor. Someone might look like a total goof, and yet have a functional idea which end of AK is the business end.

I'm more laughing at the fitness level

I would not be loughing if you saw this guys in action. If you saw them in combat in 2008 in Georgia some units esspecialy these from Chechnia looked like rag-tug collection of Vilage characters.
They gave were super effective in close combat with Western Voluntares and Israeli trained Gorgian Special Forces. Georgians and the Volonters looked realy Pro "Swat Teams" all fit, armed to the teeth with the latest gadgets but they gave up so easly.

Their fitness level was however very usefull but not for fighting but for Running

Well, sending this guy photo upper would get this fella a$$ whooped for not having all his equipment on and wearing no issued uniform but they let that one go in combat, letting go not being fit go and non staff on the site, though people personality was something they looked at not just on official level

Keep in mind that he is probably a mid ranking officer in his 40s.
The more you stay in military the less you are asked to keep your physical fitness :).

As for equipment, it is not that they do not get enough, they get basic equipment, which is plain basic stuff given to everyone. So, they prefer to a) buy their own custom fitted b) get whatever sponsor buys them (usually sponsor purchases something based on units recommendation).

Indeed they were good at running, been among "chasers" my self, but it was a stupid "war". thru out all the history there was never a war between russia and georgia and being allies for centuries. Having in one country government killing it's own people and powerthirsty in another two didn't lead to good any good to any of the people as usual
