The US-made Nitron-finish Sig slides on P226 pistols, are they made of stainless steel or plain steel before they are finished with Nitron?

The slides are made of stainless steel. As all their slides are now made of this material they no longer mark them as such as they did in the past.

Agreed. I've never heard of a slide wearing out, just the frame rails. Even the "sheet metal" slides are tough as nails (seriously, that stuff is SHEET metal??).

When did they stop marking them? My 226 says "Stainless" on the slide. I bought it used, and I'm wondering how old it is.

The reason I was asking is that the slide, although apparently stainless, is still magnetic, so It wasn't obvious at first. I always thought stainless steel is non-magnetic, but after some reading I learned that wasn't necessarily true.
Thanks for the replies.

You shouldn't worry about the slide of 226, they are very well built.

Hey Trigun

Just wondering what the difference between old stamped forge against the new stainless. Why did they change and what are the advantages and disadvantages. I got my p226 in early 2010 and love the thing! Was just wondering thanks

There isn't much different between the function. The newer (infact is not new) stainless steel slide was machined from a whole block of material, the new CNC milling machine can give you exact tolerence by just programing and push a button, it spent way less time than of stamped forge. I have tried several Sig gunjs and didn't like them, as result I still don't have one in my stable, I do love to have a older 226, the one without rail.

Thanks for the info bud

There are a lot of people who prefer the folded slides over the stainless ones (myself included).

No rail, no tail, folded slide. Mmmmmmmm. German SIG goodness.

Just got a new JK dated one today...
