Custom 308 Norma Mag

That is very heavy glass indeed. What makes you stick with it given the fantastic options that weigh less and have better optics?

Heavy glass, but good glass. A centralized 2lbs on a very light 30cal magnum makes it more pleasant to shoot, while not changing balance. I have other lighter optics but have found the LPS line to be extremely durable to rough use. They have stood decades of back country hunting abuse and maintain zero. The tube strength is very important to me.

An optic failure atop a mountain 30km from camp and hundreds from civilization is not acceptable(no irons). I stake my income, enjoyment and at times my life on my equipment. I feel comfortable with the LPS's.

I question the better optics, high index glass is heavy. Like most things firearm related there is always compromise to be made. The Premier line has top tier light transmission levels and one of the largest eye boxes available. Strong housing is required to maintain zero, especially during times of rough use. The lighter options all have their own limitations.

On topic, I really like that NM, Dave.

Lol Dave might be old, but when you drag him out elk hunting he gets young very quick . I personally look at it as a benefit, I don't have to out run the bear, just have to outrun Dave ;)

LOL, Mason. I have a distinct feeling that a 200 Partition at close to 3000 will put a serious hurt on the bear. :) Dave.

Have ordered all the parts for my first bolt action 30cal magnum

Specs to be :

Montana Rifle Co 1999 action
24" Benchmark #4 contour stainless / fluted barrel, 1:9.5 twist
McMillan Winchester Super Grade stock, 80% black 20% yellow w/ 1" Decelerator pad
All metal will be cerakoted, not sure what color yet. Probably a dark grey or black.

For optics I am leaning towards the Leupold Vx5 3-15x44 Firedot in Talley LW rings. Looks like it should be around 8.75lbs scoped?

Terry at Black Art Rifle co will be doing the build work, and it should drive 180gr Accubonds in the 3050 range

Mark, do you have any idea of an ETA on this beauty? I'm anxious to see it in action. :) Dave.

Nostalgia. Good reason. I was expecting something more technical, but nostalgia is as good a reason as any.

My dad has always been a .270 fan. He had other chamberings but a lot of rifles in .270. I was grilling him one day about his preference for .270. Poking holes in his arguments etc. Finally he just said that his much older brother, who was killed when my dad was a teenager, had his only rifle in .270.
That kinda won the argument

Hard to argue against stuff like that! Technically/Ballisticly, most things us Gun Nutz like to hash out, mean very little in the real world.

A 180gr bullet leaving the muzzle at about 3100fps can certainly fill a freezer. And not everyone has one, so if you're inclined to be different from the crowd and not have a 300 win mag like everyone an his little brother, then the Norma is a great option. Going AI would certainly ratchet things up another notch. I would think it wouldn't be much behind the 300 RUM. But in a shorter action.

Yeah, an AI would probably gain close to 1.5 grains of powder capacity. That will certainly produce a huge jump in performance. Every one knows that just stamping "AI" on a barrel is good for 10%.

woohoo, stock has arrived. Orderd Aug22nd
