Custom 308 Norma Mag

This is barely relevant, but a .308 Norma can rebore to .338 win mag after you shoot the throat out.

It can be rebored to 338, but would have to have the barrel set back to rechamber to 338 Winchester. The shoulder of the 308 NM is about 90 thousandths of an inch further from the base of the cartridge than the shoulder on the 338 Win.

The corollary to this is that 308 NM brass formed from 338 Win has a shorter neck than factory specs.

Shoots good. I have about 70 rounds down it, mainly blowing off some random bullets from my shelf to form the brass to the chamber. This morning I shot the 180gr Winchester Power Point and six different powders, average group was 0.7moa from 100y to 357y

Have the 212gr Hornady ELDx to 2830 fps with RL26. Will probably hunt with a combo of that bullet and the 180gr Swift A-Frame for this fall

Have you used the ELDx on game? How does it perform?

Only one experience first hand, 230gr 338" that didn't handle elk shoulder blade very well. Good deer sized game bullet, especially for way out there.

I'm very impressed with your build, Mark. It looks [and shoots] like it should.
I have a 308 Norma Mag on a Santa Barbara action with a 1-9" Benchmark 26"
Barrel in a Macmillan, and it shoots the 200 Accubond or Partition into very
tiny little groups.
How much 26 are you using behind that ELDX? Dave.

thanks Dave! In virgin Norma brass that holds 90.2grs water, I'm around 71.5 grains. In fire formed brass I expect to be in 69ish grains of RL26, approx 2815 fps from 24" barrel

My assistant and I hit the range yesterday to fire off another batch of ammo. This 308 Norma likes powder, and lots of it.

Just gets better and better, Mark. You have a very fine shooter there, and it will
serve you well. I am prepping my latest 308NM for this fall....200 Partition and
enough Reloder 25 to make 2900+ Typical 100M [109Yard] group below. Dave.

Dave, is that the pretty Husqvarna?

It always did well when it was here. :)

Ted

Actually, Ted, this is another Mauser action, but a custom build by the boys in Dawson Creek.
Benchmark barrel, 1-9" twist, 26" [has a brake, but I am using the cap] Timney, McMillan classic
Decelerator. Nice build, and shoots crazy. The Husky is still around, but does not see a lot of
action ATM. Dave.

Elk hunting ammo ready! 180gr Swift A-Frame over 75.5grs RL26, does 2990 fps avg over 9 rounds

Here's a 100y and 327y group

I hunted with a 26" barreled made in Germany Voerre action Black Forest rifle in 308 Norma Mag for over 20 years still have it in the safe but its parked now shoot a 26" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 300RUM now 200gr Accubonds and Swift A-Frames @ 3200fps.

I used Norma MRP powder I loaded Norma Nickle jacket/yellow ball tipped bullets at 3060fps.

My 308 Norma Magnum isn't a custom job but a Schultz & Larsen model 65DL. The most accurate load I've ever put through it, to date, was using the 200gr Sierra SBT pushed by IMR 4350. Five shot group of 1.061" and a four shot group of 0.722".
