What other kind of custom actions are avaliable in Canada. I already know about the Montana Rifleman action. Look a little on the heavy side.
Ed Brown makes a nice action called the M702 but I don't know if you can buy it separatly or if you have to buy the whole firearm. Plus its in the States and thats another hurdle to jump over.

Thanks

Well, there is Barnard actions now from Ian Robertson. RPA Quad Lock and Quad Lite actions from Paul Rieben at Range Sports Unlimited, Millennium actions from Ken Pisihco in Winnipeg. These are all single shot bolt actions with the exception of the RPA Quad Lite that you can get in a repeater.

If you want truely Canadian how about a Gaulin or a PGW.

WHOA, slow down a bit:)

I had no idea that there were so many different aftermarket bolt actions avaliable, and thats probably just the tip of the iceberg.

Now I have a lot of homework to do.

ATR , your getting a PM

We import Bat, Nesika, actions from Kelbley's, Farley etc....just about anything you want. We are just finalizing details on some Bat actions.

We haven't finalized details on a tactical manufacturer in the USA, but we are slowly working on it.

What kind of gun are you looking at building?

If your looking for Canadian content - PGW or Armtech (Gaulin guys) out of Quebec.

I want to build a lightweight, high power rifle for easy packing in the B.C. mountains. I am thinking right now of a 300 wsm as far as cartridge. As light as I can get without sinking crazy amounts of cash into it

If push comes to shove I have a nice BDL 7mm mag that I can work on but everyone has one of those cut down to packing weight. I am trying to convince myself to sell some firearms and take the plunge but I would have to sell 3 or 4 firearms to be able to afford a fully custom ultra light rifle built to my specs.

I have to admit that I had no idea that there were so many aftermarket bolt actions avaliable. Now I feel farther behind than when I started:redface:

I don't see the point in buying a rifle, and stripping it down just to use the action when you can buy an aftermarket action cheaper. The montana action is $700 canadian, I don't know what the others run but it is still cheaper than most rifles and you have something a little more unique.

The Montana actions are NOT light though, they come stainless or CM
Least expensive route might be to buy a Rem 700 Titanium , loose some of the spare metal, but a decent barrel on it and a real light stock.
Nesika , Dakota etc are minimally double the cost of the Montana actions, but the fit and finish are at least 2 times better as well. I use a number of MRC actions and they are great hunting actions, but not the precision of the Nesika, Dakota and some others

If you are not in a rush, Stiller is coming out with the new Predator action. It will be in the 600.00 US mark. It is geared towards the hunter. It is basically a copy of the Rem 700 except with far better tolerences. I think it would be a great candidate for a hunting rifle.

Brambles, you might want to see what Stiller has available. Cycbb486 might be able to tell us if its a steel or aluminum receiver.

I would think an aluminum action with steel inserts would be the way to go for an ultralight. I haven't built one like this myself, but it would be worth investigating.

Most of the custom actions are all steel with exception to the Kelbley line, Stiller, and the PGW ti actions. Which means they would be heavier. Jim Borden is making ultralight rifles on his actions as are a few others. The receiver will be in the $1000-1200 usd usually without bottom metal, but if your looking to go light a blind mag - adl style would likely be the way to go.

I did a little looking in to the Predator action from Stiller. Apparently $650 usd gets you a stainless steel action built to tighter tolerances than the Rem 700 and is a direct replacement.
Don't know the weight of these actions is

Anyone know who can import these actions in Canada?

Another idea, and this is what I am doing. I have purchased a rem 700 LA from wholesale sports as a action donor. This is the new SPS model. It is in a magnum bolt face. I am chambering it in 300 wsm, I have seated a 180 gr barnes x BT the proper distance, (the base of the BT @ the base of the neck). This would not run in a SA but fits just fine in a LA. I am using a Boyds thumbhole stock. A McPhee 1-10 30 cal barrel. Ken Farrel 20 min aluminum base. Kwick clip conversion (I still do a little bit of truck hunting so a detachable magazine is nice). Leupold Mk 4 3.5-10X with QD rings. I adjust my scope for distance changes over 300 yds, this is the F-class shooter coming out.:D

Price list approx...
Action = $500
Stock = $120
Barrel = $400
Base = $130
Clip = $150
Scope = $1600
Rings = $130
Smith work ?

Not the cheapest or the lightest but my choice for a lighter hunting rifle. After lugging my 15 lb 338 Lapua through the mountains this fall I definatly need something lighter. There are many different choices this is just my personal theory.

There was a rumor that one of the companies who are making double bridge magnum mauser actions will also reintroduce the kurz M98. It was a fellow named Roden, IIRC. That would be a neat little rifle, but considering the price of a new magnum mauser, it may not be very economical.
