I need a 19 or 20 inch Heavy pattern barrel for a future M14 EBR build and want to know if it is much
of a hassle for a qualified smith to cut down a 22" barrel and re-thread it for a standard muzzle device?

Thank you :)

EDIT

Krieger said:

We 'can' cut and crown out 22" M14 HVY pattern barrel to 18"-20", but we will not thread it at that point.
The diameter of the barrel in that location is actually smaller than the section that is threaded for the GI flash suppressor.
The diameter of the barrel at 18-20" is too thin to thread and we simply won't do it.

That sucks...

Krieger is quite correct.

You might be able to thread 9/16-24 on that section of the barrel or 14x1.0

1/2-28 is popular; however, leaves you little meat IMHO.

The medium weight is available in 18.5 inch fron Krieger with stock threading at the end.

I have seen a fluted 18.5 inch barrel with oversized op rod guide in the states but nothing here yet.

NEA was thinking about producing barrels; however, not sure if heavy weight shorty would be on the short list of likely candidates.

Just get Ron to thread it for his AR10 SEI flash hidders. After the chop and re-crowning you will be gtg ;)
I did it to mine old 18.5" chop-mod done by Dlask. All be it it was an SEI Vortex still on it :p

Then I sent the gas assembely off to the Doc for his ultimate front sight mod and added this bad boy:evil:

Mauser GDog what ever i felt like at the time is the optic's of choice.
H2O MAN I hear ya about not wanting 2 short of a barrel & to find that key sweet spot for free people like your self that can shoot with cans. I to wouldn't recommend any shorter than 19 inches and you will have the best of both world's. Please post back with your supper slick rig once completed with pictures and resualts when your done cause I am sure many of your north M14 brother would sure love to drool over what new totaly cool water works that you come up with next ;)

I believe that the AR10 thread pattern is 5/8-24 (0.625 inches) so there wouldn't be enough meat at the 18 to 20 inch barrel length. The i.d. of a usgi gas lock is somewhere between 0.600 and 0.620 if memmory serves.

Ron does make a nice vortex for 30 cal in 9/16-24 though...

Just get Ron to thread it for his AR10 SEI flash hidders.

This question of length is centered around my gearing up to build a copy of the MK 14 Mod 2
CRANE is building for the US NAVY... I have decided to leave the length of the barrel at 22.0"

Now I need to decide on Chrome-Moly or Stainless Steel

You get to decide on twist with the heavy as well...

Worthy of mention, the optic mount CRANE uses on their rifles is unobtainium to mere mortals
so EBR builder (Peterson) suggested I follow his lead and use the CASM mount from M14.ca

Actually he could make a 1 off for the H2O MAN as I am sure he preatty much has a cot in the back of Ron's shop. LoL but you are right about the 9/16-24 or the 1/2x28 would be easier to do.

Oh Ya H2O MAN tell me what you think about the CASM mount please as I would love to hear it from ya ;)
As from what I remeber about the CRANE mount was that the front anchor point was a barrel band right?

Yep, as depicted in the photo above Springfield Armory Inc. made a copy of the CRANE mount and both used a barrel band.
