what is the usual wait time for a smith to make a custom one off barrel, with barrel blank readily availible (IE no crazy cust caliber)? 2-3 months sound normal? more or less?

I had to wait about 2 months for my last barrel. Nothing crazy just a plain old 30 inch .30 barrel in light Palma contour.

I've found that even a little job can take at least that long at any decent gunsmith due to their workload, longer at an exceptional one. Even if they have everything for your project on hand, there's usually always 20 jobs ahead of yours. It's always helpful for you to have 4 or 5 projects going at the same time as well to keep yourself occupied while waiting:D

My local Smith made me a custom barrel in less than 2 weeks, and its a very accurate barrel. You should contact Jason Spencer at Gunco in Nepean/Ottawa.

Good guy!

Depends entirely on how busy the guy is and what you want done. The time of year matters too. This time of year, right before deer season, most of them are up to their eyeballs with work hunters have put off to the last second. Mind you, custom barrel makers are busy all year.

Krieger is quoting 10-12 weeks to fill my orders, Gaillard took nearly 3 months to get a barrel to me. McPhee is usually fairly fast with his 30 cals. Delivery time is typically inversely proportional to your need for timely delivery... plan ahead! :)
