custom barrels

I have a AIA Enfield in 7.62x39 that I want to have a 12" custom manufactured barrel made fore it.
You can't legally have the barrel cut down shorter then 18 1/2 "but it is is legal to have a custom barrel made by a custom manufacture!
I love NR short barrelled rifles for hunting

I agree with your thinking. Us folks that hunt in rain forest conditions do good with a well tuned short gun, especially when we get older.

That's not the way I read the law and neither do any of the other gunsmiths I know...........my reading says it must come from the manufacturer like that or the shorter barrel option must also be from THAT manufacturer. I can make you a 12" barrel, not cut down from any other barrel, actually manufactured as a 12" barrel, but by my interpretation it still becomes restricted. I may be wrong, but this seems to be the accepted interpretation.

Worded wrong, sorry guys didn't mean to imply I was a gunsmith, despite any talents I may have, I have never been formally trained and as such do not qualify to call myself a "gunsmith". Didn't mean to offend any of you real gunsmiths out there.

Doug, I don't believe that is the case... the barrel must be manufactured by "a" licenced firearms (barrel) manufacturer, but not necessarily "the" original firearms manufacturer... that is the way I understand it at least... the law was to stop DIY chops rendering non-restricted weapons into concealable (criminal) weapons... I would be happy to be either right or wrong in this.

I think the 1022 is not bad example I installed a manufacture 12 inch barrel onto the rifle it is still NR
If I would have cut the barrel down would have made it prohibited, but a barrel that was manufactured to 12" inches is okay
If I was to use the wrong stock and made the rifle under 26 inches overall it would be restricted!
(Canada has some funny laws when it comes to firearms LOL)

The rules for rimfire are different than for centerfire... I have many SBR rimfire rifles and the law is clear... I believe with regard to barrel modification the same premise applies.

Hoyt I respect your interpretation, however what is a "licensed barrel maker", anyone with the right equipment and knowledge can legally make barrels in Canada for sure and as far as I know in the US as well. Who is the licensing authority for barrel making? Is it an FFL dealer in the US? That would be my guess anyway.

The rules for rimfire are different than for centerfire... I have many SBR rimfire rifles and the law is clear... I believe with regard to barrel modification the same premise applies.

The only difference in the law applies to semiautomatic rifles (Center fire )where the barrel cannot be under 18 1/2 inches and magazine restricted to five rounds.
Other than the restrictions on semiautomatics the The law is the same for both centerfire and rimfire rifles in regards to Rifle barrels

I think over at North Shore Barrels they have made a number of NR sort barrels rifles for customers
Now that they are working with the gunsmith
