Where is a good place to get a barrel made? ive got no clue on where you could go to get a barrel made to custom specifications. if any one knows where you can get a really fine barrel, that would be awsome. btw im in Manitoba, so if its close that would be good.

(for those who ask what gun its for, dont bother. im trying to work on making a custom tack driver in .223.)

(Also I know you can get glorious custom stuff from places but it practically costs your first born. Im on a budget. it would be nice to get a barrel for under 400)

Please do not take this as a personal attack because it is not intended as such. This question gets asked almost once a week on this forum so if you search for your answer you will find what you seek.

whoops sorry about that then, i guess i used the wrong search terms, any good search terms to use in order to find barrel reviews on this website?
 
The barrel is only as good as the shooter, bedding, scope, and (tuned) ammo. If you are a novice, and a 2moa shooter, your best bet is to focus on honing your skills, and reloading (which is a generally considered a pre-requisite for accuracy)
My most accurate rifle is a glass bedded 90 year old military surplus rifle, with original barrel - it consistently shoots into a dime at 100 y with good handloads.

I did an advanced search and selected titles. I searched both in the Gunsmithing forum and the Precision Rifle forum and got numerous hits. Some threads go on for three pages. I searched for custom barrels, the exact title of your post.

Are you talking about buying a blank for under $400 or having a blank chambered and threaded to your action for that price. There are dealers on this site that sell short chambered and/or threaded barrels.

If you are looking to chamber yourself, and even if you are going to turn the reamer by hand the cost of a reamer will set you back$110 US before shipping, duty and GST.
 
ok Im sorry about putting up a dulplicate thread. i goofed on my search. im looking for having one chambered and threaded to my action for under 400
 
A little over a year ago, I spent $360 dollars for a 28" target barrel form Ron McLennan; that was for the unthreaded blank. By the time I got it threaded, chambered, and the action tured up a bit, I think it was around $700.
 
I've bought a great many barrels, and the general price range from a Canadian custom barrel maker is going to be between roughly $300-500, depending on which metal, length, taper, fluting, bore size are selected. Then you have to have it fitted, another $200-400. There are cheaper pre-chambered (short chambered or long threaded) barrels from the states, slightly to greatly lower quality. You need an import permit to bring them into the country legally. Changing barrels on anything but a Savage is not really cheap (Savages are easier because you can adjust headspace mechanically). - dan
 
Don't sell the U.S. makers short: ie: Hart, Krieger,Lilja, Badger, etc. Even Douglas, and Green Mountain make great barrels and the price is right!!
 
When looking at equip. lists from CBA Benchrest results, only one Canadian name crops up...Ron Smith(many times) otherwise its..Hart, Shilen,Lilja,Kreiger,Douglas,etc. The current record holder (0.184)was using a Ron Smith barrel!
 
I was referring to the pre chambered Midway and A&B barrels, which are ok for what they are, but are not a BR quality barrel by any means. Hence the lower cost. If you buy a quality barrel from a US maker, it will cost you just as much or more then a similar quality barrel from a Canadian maker. You guys ok with it now? - dan
 
so if i was going to buy a barrel from say ron smith, it would run me at least 700$? wow, i think im going to wait even longer to get a custom. thats a lot of cash. :(
 
^ Yep. Getting a custom barrel & having it fitted is usually as expensive as just getting a whole new gun. But, it's the only way to get a custom caliber, and sometimes it's the only way to get a particular chamber in a particular model/barrel length & finish. And, of course, aftermarket barrels are usually much higher quality than factory jobs. And you can probably get around a hundred bux for the old barrel on the EE if it's in reasonable condition
