There is a builder, I think out of Washington, that build really nice bolt action big bore rifles with short barrels - 19" to 21" or so. He had a great web site with lots of drool-worthy pictures, but I can't seem to find it.

Can anyone help me out?

Ha! After looking for several days I finally found it - not long after I post asking for help.

I would buy a Ruger RSM, and cut the barrel back. Wholesale Calgary had some beautifully stocked ones, a .458 Lott and... was it a .416 Rigby? Can't remember. I bought my .375 H&H RSM from Russells, and it is my favorite rifle purchase to date. Unbelievably accurate, bolt that moves like it's on ball bearings, all steel, beautiful timber, and the sight rib is integral to the barrel... I'll stop, you get the idea. Cut down, it would be all too similar to what you have pictured there.

Except they don't make the RSM in 550 Gibbs. ;)

I do love mine in 416 Rigby. They're probably the nicest factory African rifle available.

I checked Ruger's web site...they are no longer listed. How would you compare it to Sako's Safari?

notice how high the sights have to be on those "modern classic" stocked rifles compared to the sights on the "pre war classic" stock on Winterkreigs rifle.

I would not enjoy firing that 505, the straight modern classic stock does not fit me well, especially offhand and sitting, 1/4 of the butt ends up above my shoulder. The pre war style fits me much better for offhand and sitting.

Conversely I find the modern classic style fits better from the bench than the pre war style.

Never handled the Sako. The Ruger is hell for strong with the integral scope mounts (that are well lighter than Sako's offering). One piece bolt and Mauser-style extractor and ejector. The bolt doesn't field strip quite as easy as a Model 70 (you need a paperclip or similar item to lock the striker back on the RSM) but I love the rifle to death. I'd even have one rebored to 505 if they weren't such a stout price.

the only complaint I've heard is that the 375 H&H version is a tad heavy because they use the same contour barrel as the 416/450 bore. Maybe Ardent can measure his at the muzzle and confirm and I'll measure my 416 Rigby for comparison's sake.

Will do, would be interested to know, and yes she's a bit heavy. I suspect it is the same contour, as it is one beefy barrel. Honestly, I like it that way now, it's a Cadillac and the most accurate factory rifle I own... which surprised the heck out of me. Likely the one gun, aside form my first Cooey, I'll never sell, love that thing.

You hit the nail on the head with that buckbrush!.. The only BA rifles that fit me well are the old Brno's and Husky's.. The Remington Monte Carlo and the Euro Bavarian stocks aren't a bad fit either..
The photo of the rifle Winterkreigs posted is perfect!

The new M98 Magnums are beautiful, but I seem to recall that they are +$10,000...although the customrifles are also well above that price. Makes the CZ Safari look like the deal of the decade.

There is an online sale on CZ 550 American Safari Magnums in .375 H&H and .416 Rigby at Wholesale Sports right now. The ones with brown laminated stocks look really nice.
