I have been looking to buy some revovlers for cowboy action shooting and know how tough the blackhawks are so i decided to use them as my platform. I was planning on getting vaqueros but got these two at different times for really good deals so im happy.
They are both .357 mag ruger new model blackhawks, one is a 7.5 inch bisley and the other a 4.6 inch standard model.
The bisley has a steel grip frame and the standard has an alluminum frame so as you can imagine its quite heavy with the long barrel and the standard is way too light being so short.
So i got to work, i swapped each grip frame and then discovered i had to swap all the internals over as well since there are a few design differences beween the bisley hammer, cylinder, trigger and pawl. Each receiver still has its original cylinder and both cycle perfectly and lock up tight. It took a couple dry runs before this happend the frames are a little different in size as you can see by the line up but the cylinder lock still works great.
The result is two revolvers that are more or less the same weight with their own unique properties. By the way the short one is a tank now
I have only been to the range with them once but was able to produce some really close groups at 25 yards with the long one and keep it all in the black with the short one which has no real recoil in .38 or .357 they are both ar real pleasure to shoot.
I also got my leather this week from Marty King at Longhorn Leather in Chatham, on. I wasnt sure which side i was going to put the long barrel in so i had them both made the same size. He did a heck of a job and it cost less than a set of cheap holsters from Cabelas if you could find them. Material is harness leather and its super thick.
