I have an idea for a build. I have a H&R single shot action. And an old muzzle loader barrel. I am looking for a gun smith that would be capable of cutting the locking lug off the muzzle loader barrel, welding it on to a barrel blank, chambering the barrel in a pistol caliber, fitting and head spacing the new barrel and making and cutting some kind of extractor. And either mounting a rail on the barrel or iron sights. Any one have a suggestions on a smith in Canada that is able to do it?

OK, you want to find a gunsmith who can make a pistol caliber barrel to fit your H&R single shot shotgun action. I assume this is a top break Topper type.
I have no idea what you mean when you say you want an old muzzleloading barrel adapted.
Perhaps the easiest route would be to alter a shotgun barrel. Sleeve it or cut it to create a monoblock and fit a rifle barrel to that. Alter the shotgun extractor to work with the small pistol cartridge.
You might need to have the large shotgun firing in bushed to a smaller size.
I have a bent Cooey .410 barrel. Useless as a shotgun barrel. I have considered installing a rifle barrel in the breech section. I have a .32-20 reamer and an inexpensive take-off .30 barrel could be used.
I have an H&R 12ga single, and an extra .357Max barrel for it. Excellent plinker. I can understand your interest in the project.

You might want to decide how badly you want to have this barrel made. It isn't going to be cheap. Lots of billable hours.

What I was saying about the muzzle loader barrel was. The locking lug that fit the h&r frame could be cut of the muzzle loader barrel (they are welded on from factory) and then welded on to a barrel blank. Just saves haveing to make the locking lug from scratch.

I have a custom 15.5in barrel for my encore in 9mm and a 24in 45lc barrel for the same platform. The reason I have an interest in this build is MGM the company that makes the barrels for the encore don’t have ever caliber available. And just be cool to have another pistol caliber on a different platform.

As for cost, the mgm barrels cost about 1100 depending on the exchange rate at the time of purchase. To be honest cost is not a factor. I like custom stuff I like weird and different stuff so sometimes I have to pay a lot for it.

Now you did bring up something that I wasn’t thinking about. Maybe it will be easier to get a barrel liner and line a shotgun barrel with a rifle barrel, or just modify a shotgun barrel.

I would cut off the ML barrel ahead of the underlug. Then I would sleeve the new barrel into it. It could be soldered or threaded. Chamber and fit the extractor and Bob's your uncle.

Product Description

Adapters to change the caliber of your break action 12ga.

You can buy adapters for 12ga pretty cheap. If the muzzleloader is one of those old H&R or NEF barrels could just push out the breech plug with a rod. From there cut off the barrel just ahead of the chamber get an adapter and epoxy/sliver solder in an adapter bam permanent barrel. Personally I’d start with another shotgun barrel sell the muzzleloader barrel.

But be carful what you use for adapters only the strongest shotguns should be used with some mainly rifle calibers and stuff like .44 mag as the bolt thrust is greater then that of 12ga.

Firing pins may also need to be bushed as primers could flow back.

I have thought myself about grabbing a less then nice looking single and doing basically the same thing.

I know about the adapters, I have a few. I like the idea of cutting the barrel off ahead of the under lug and sleeve the new barrel in to it. The reason for this is to make a pcc that is in a caliber that’s not offered/different and to have some thing different and unique

Take a .44 magnum 18 inch adapter sleeve it into the shotgun being used and rechamber it for .44-40.

I may have missed it and someone already said it, but you can cut the shotgun barrel or what ever barrel is on the rifle now so it's about 3" long then bore and thread the inside of the cut off barrel and take your blank or takeoff barrel and thread the OD of it and then screw it into the cut off barrel.

The same way double rifles are build using a mono block

(Just use the top 2 pics for reference as to what I mean"

Maybe Epps can do it. I read people doing it. Taking the locking lug off a single shot barrel and welding it on barrel blank. Converting it to fit a H&R. Since barrels are rare as hens teeth.

Another option if the ML barrel is thick enough, is putting a barrel liner in. Chazzel makes barrel liners with chamber cut in them.

Hi
Just chop off your 12 gauge shotgun barrel after the fore arm lug and tap the 12gauge chamber to 7/8×14 thread. Buy a green mountain barrel blank in any pistol caliber and turn the first 2.5" inches to thread it to fit the threaded chamber. Turn the rest of the barrel to 5/8 and thread it in. Make a tapered collar on the barrel end with set screws to center the barrel in the shotgun stub and to lock everything in. Then ream it.it works out not to bad. Or if I feel lazy I just turn a blank into 19 or20" inch shotgun insert. I use a tapered threaded collar on the end to center and lock it in. Just don't do it with high pressure rifle cartridges, you will blow primer pieces into your face
Thanks for listening

Thinking about a way to convert a shotgun barrel to a rifle barrel...
Thread the chamber 7/8-14. Install a bushing 7/8-14OD, 5-8-18ID.
Cut the barrel beyond forend lug, forend length.
Turn a barrel with breech threads of 5/8-18. It will slide in from the muzzle end, screw into the bushing. Rear portion turned to clear the shotgun bore, close fit to outer end of shotgun barrel/monobloc, to fix the rifle barrel in position. A shoulder is created for the rifle barrel to pull up against the remains of the shotgun barrel when screwed in. What you have is a rifle barrel with a really long shank. Outer portion of rifle barrel contoured appropriately. Rifle barrel to shotgun barrel transition would be smooth, only a line showing the transition, at the end of the forend.
Chamber the rifle barrel. Cut the ejector notch. Bush the firing pin.
A rimmed cartridge would be easiest. As I mentioned, I have a .32-20 reamer. .30 take off barrels are common.

I agree. I think all the texting has caused it.
Not really. Military, police, aircraft control and gun community used acronym, long before cell phones. Nothing to do with the younger generation and texting.

This been going on since the dawn of radios.

Considering there is a whole section on this forum for Pistol caliber carbines ( PCC )
