So my mum, who knows nothing about guns but used to be a seamstress, has made me a couple of “custom” cases. They are flannel on the inside with a waxed canvas exterior. I wouldn’t have chosen these colours but they were what she had around.

She has no real intention of going into business, but is curious what people would pay for such a thing? So I’m polling you guys.

Honestly not an ad, more for her own interest.

This is a rifle case (which she swore off making again, but when I get a combo gun I’ll try to convince her):

Shotgun case (she seemed to enjoy making this “roll” style case)

What do you guys think? What kind of cash would people drop on these? Not worth much in an era of cabelas and sweatshops? Or is there a line of pipe smoking pheasant hunters forming outside her house as we speak?

Hmm made by Chinese children in a sweatshop not an elderly (sorry mum) Irish woman in her kitchen :dancingbanana:

This is always an issue. Someone sees factory made wool socks for $30 and thinks that's what handmade socks are worth. Uh, no. The wool cost $30 because the crafter is buying it retail plus tax and it's 12 hours labour. That's why nobody sells socks. They give them to people they love and hope the recipient understands how generous that was of them.

Those are nice, and I'm guessing of much better quality than the Chinese crap... If I had a need for one I would lean towards something like that. So hard to name a price, and I'm guessing to make it worth it for your mum it would have to be almost prohibitively expensive...but, if you like at the prices of high end upland gear in today's market maybe a couple hundred or more isn't that crazy at all.

Yeah that’s the case (hahaha)

For the shotgun roll probably 6-8 hrs a case 50-75 bucks material

Even at minimum wage that’s ~200 dollars

A lot to ask when Amazon has mass produced crap for a quarter of the price

I really like the roll case in particular and bless your mum for making it for you. Really nice. On the topic of hand made vs. amazon, a fellow at the club knew I did some leather work and asked if I would make him 3 or 4 boot protectors to rest his shotgun barrels on. Here's one to use as a template, he said. But I would like it 1/4" wider all around and use thicker material. And I like the ones with a stud to stop the barrels sliding.
So I made him two to try out. There are about 12 steps to making these, each from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, and 4 hours in total. Cost to me about $10 for the leather, dye, thread, and fasteners. He thought $20 each was fair to me because that's twice what he's used to paying in the States. I didn't tell him how effed that is but the next two I made are gifts to other friends and not for sale.

I just repurposed a BLR case like this one for a CVA Scout T/D, I did some stitching inside and moved some straps around, the downside for me is the Browning sticker, I may cover that with something. So for this case [I already had it]I was out about $50 plus my labour and I am not as good as your Mom. So for a $500 rifle I probably wouldn't pay $200 for a case, however if I had a takedown rifle worth a few thousand I would want it in a case like your Mom could make.

The ability to make your own gear is priceless. But there is rarely a market for homemade gear at a price range that makes any sense for the person making it. I make/ build/design a ton of stuff for my own use. I never even consider selling them on any kind of scale... the value for ne is higher end stuff at a fraction of the cost outlay for factory made ( just dont count your time)

I sew my own stuff! But that is what it’s worth and no less imo

David’s work is A+ quality! His leather combination cheek rest/shell holders are first class.

He repaired a leather gun case to better-than-new for me, and at a reasonable price.

Your mother’s work is lovely, Conor, and certainly worth several times the imported stuff.

I shared everyone’s kind words with her and she is pretty happy with them. She has enough canvas left to make me one more case, and then she will go back to enjoying her retirement :) I think I had better buy a gun worthy of a case!

Would love to see some examples of DGY’s work too

This is a cartridge holder that holds two 9.3X62 rounds under the fore end on a Ruger Number 1. It fastens with two leather strips under the quarter rib on the barrel.

It is quite secure, and holds the rounds tightly.

Friend of mine made horse stuff and made me a gun case with material she made saddle blankets with. It's such tough material it will out last me . Only thing she did wrong is she put the zipper from the barrel end to the butt . But you learn to live with it.
