Custom Colt 1911A1 9mm

I was at the range today giving my newest toy (custom 9mm 1911A1) a workout. NOT! I could not get the firing pin to make contact with the primers. I was shooting Winchester White Box and then some of Remington’s $58 for 250 round stuff. I did break primer on two rounds of the later ammo and then it was back to not getting the firing pin to make contact with the primers. I was upset and in a quandary of how to save the day? My solution was to go to the Mercedes and get my Glock 17 (G17). The G17 never missed a beat and grouped very well.

I was using factory 17 round magazines with my G17. Is it just me or does it seem like it takes forever to empty a 17 round magazine? In all honesty, it is nice to only use three magazines to shoot a box of 50 rounds:)

I am sure the 1911 is suffering from either a short firing pin or a broken one. Why? When it did break primer, it functioned perfectly. The two rounds that I got to fire did not group any better than those from my $475 G17.

Thank God that I had the sense to have the trusty G17 in the back of the SUV.

Personally, I thought the moral of the story was to never bring just one gun to the range....As for the 17 round magazines I'm a little lost on the moral of the story but I recall somewhere in my distant past shooting a few magazines with 15 rounds out of my CZ 75 at Barnet Rifle Range before Marcie came over and bawled me out. It was 5 rounds after that.....:redface:

1) cheaper prices on ammo in the Usa
2) cheaper prices on Glock's
3) 17 round mags vs 10
4) A Mercedes Suv

I do not consider $58 for 250 9mms cheap, in my view it is stiff. I got a good deal on my G17 from a shop that I deal a lot with. My 1998 Mercedes ML320 SUV was a good buy at $11,000 and it is the best vehicle I have owned. To show that I am not a snob my other vehicles are a 1999 Crown Victoria and my wife's 2007 Ford Escape.

We also looked at a used ML320 earlier this year when we were looking to replace my wife's aging GMC Safari van [the dog mobile...lol...]. Anyway, we went with the Mazda Tribute, which is the Ford Escape with Mazda badges. Nice wheels.... ;)
 
I talked to Marianne of the Accurizer Gunshop in Troy, Michigan today and her opinion was it was either a firing pin or too light spring(s) problem. I am going to see her Monday and bring this pistol and a project idea for her to mull over. Any excuse for me to see Marianne is a good one. Why? When you are as old as I am she is "eye candy!" You should have done the "pencil test" before going to the range. Maybe your mainspring is too light. Or maybe a couple other reasons.

Of course, when the 1911 doesn't work, you go out and get the Glock. The Glock always works........... Yeah right........
 
The 9mm is repaired and I will give it a test drive on Wednesday. The problem was the firing pin and Series 80 safety plunger had to be fitted. Another thing was the set screw in the trigger had to be backed off a little. Marianne said Larry Green, the guy that put this pistol together, set the screw to Series 70 specs and not Series 80 specs. Marianne also did a fluff and buff on both the DW's triggers (there were burr like areas). Total bill was $30 and I feel it was money well spent. Lastly, Marianne said figuring out what was wrong with the 9mm was beyond my abilities. Regards, Richard:D

PS the moral of this story is buy a 1911A1 9mm that is made by major manufacturer. Why? It will probably run from the get go; I guess one is never too old to learn;)

Greenhorse, I own 3 Colts, 1 Dan Wesson CBOB, 1 Kimber, 2 'rincos, 2 Paras, 1 Rock Island, 2 Springers, and a Sistema Colt 1927 all in 45acp. I also own a Ballester-Molina that is similar to a 1911. I ask do I have enough 1911s in 45acp? Regards, Richard:D

Back to the Range: Custom Colt 1911A1 9mm

My shooting friend, Billy. and I hied ourselves to the range today. I brought the Custom Colt 1911A1 9mm and my CZ75 Compact as a backup if the 1911 didn't want to fire. Such wasn't the case, by the end of the session the Custom Colt 1911A1 9mm was putting 18 rounds into a golf ball hole at 10 yards.

I did have some problems but none of them were failures to fire or not hitting where the Custom Colt 1911A1 9mm was aimed at. Sometimes the slide does not hold open after the last round is fired and I had a few jams but they were easy to clear. I am going to shoot another 200-300 rounds through the Custom Colt 1911A1 9mm and if the problems do not clear up it will be back at Marianne's (the Accurizer Gunshop).

I put a few magazines through Billy's CZ75B and this gun will shoot. I compared the trigger with my CZ75 Compact and the later has a far better trigger. Billy is going to take the CZ75B's round count to 500 and if the trigger doesn't improve send it to CZ-USA. I trully enjoyed shooting these two pistols.

The sleeper of the day was Billy's Series 80 Gold Cup, this National Match is capable of putting two rounds in the same hole at 10 yards and that is with me shooting it. This pistol is also in dire need of a trigger job but it sure is a sweet shooter. Billy cannot shoot it well and offered to sell it to me. I said I would give him the $500 he paid for it.

Our plan of action is to shoot Billy's Series 80 Gold Cup versus my Series 80 Gold Cup. We want to compare how they shoot and their triggers.
