I was thinking of getting a custom deer rifle built on a Mauser action. My buddy who has had a number of them built told me its hard to get the money out of them that you put in if you decide to sell it. He says that custom deer rifles don't get near the return as do Varmint customs. Is this true.Any hints on what would fetch me the best coin if I decide to sell it at a later date?(wood, synthetic, calibre, barrel)

THANK YOU

You wont get your money out of a custom mauser. (proabley) At the same time you can get a really good rifle if you shop for a custom mauser.

Check out AA collectable on this site. they have 98s and 96s with 90 percent of the expensive work done for less then 300.

I can see that being true. I was thinking of having some work done on my rem 700 bdl 30-06. I wanted barrel fluting, powder coating and fitted with new liteweight camo stock .The bill for this would have been around $1500.00 plus the $900.00 I originally paid for it would make it worth $2400.00?? probally lucky to re sell it for $1200.00. You can buy a new browning stainless stalker camo for $1000.00 plus tax or the same in Tikka for even less.I think for me to justify having this kind of work done it would have to be on a rifle that I basically got for free to start with.

I think part of the problem is the features that are personal to you, caliber action, stock, weight balance etc, all of the things that make the rifle custom are things that are chosen personally by you. Unlesss you sell the gun to your twin then they are not necessarily things that anyone else might choose. If you built your rilfe say in 25-06 then maybe the guy who buys it wants a 257 ai Roberts. See he has to change the barrel so he doesn't want to pay the 600$ for a barrel he doesn't want. I have never seen a custom gun go for more than 50 to 75 percent of it's original value. That said don't let it stop you, build what you want and enjoy it.

I have had dozens of customs made, you will always lose money. There are fun to play with though.Get one made but never as an investment.
