Looking to have a custom holster & belt made for an old revolver (antique) with old west styling - potentially a family heirloom. Anyone know of good leather worker making quality holsters in Canada they would recommend?

Maybe try a saddle maker if nothing comes around for you . When I was a kid there was an old guy around that made saddles bridles boots etc and could make anything out of leather . He even made sleeping roll bags and saddle bags etc for local bike guys

I know of a leather worker in North Battleford Saskatchewan, Austin's Sadderly. He does all kinds of custom leather work. The Mawson brothers make world famous saddles and other leather work. I know them personally and if you want quality workmanship this is where you want to go. Hope this is helpful. Zow.

.45Colt: Try: Marstar. Several choices there, that may be of interest. Last Best West, out of Calgary. Another good source. I believe fellow cgn'rs Fingers284 and Garand may also know of saddle makers that might suit.

Failing any of these, you're pretty much going to have to look to the U.S. El Paso Saddlery, might be a good place to start. Well know for their authentic rigs. Followed by Mernickle, and Kirkpatrick Leather. There are others, but any of those three make excellent holsters and gun rigs.

There are quite a few very talented leather craftsmen here on the forum. Comb through the ‘Things we Made’ thread in the DIY forum and shoot one of the members a private message.

Alex is right I do know an excellent leather man that I would recommend seven days a week ...but first you have to provide a bit more info to make a recommendation on where to go.

First is, what is your budget Your options run from a "build it yourself for $100-150 leather bucket just to carry your gun around a range " to a Mexican "budget outfit" that can be very good or very bad & you dont know until it hits your door in the $300 range or a "off the wall mass produced US manufactured rig on the $400 neighborhood or the custom rig that will last for a lifetime of use in the $600 range( for a single holster outfit).
My first double competition rig was home built ( I had just purchased 2 complete sets of Cowboy guns for the wife & I so money for holsters was very slim). They weren't fancy but were very serviceable. All you need is a chunk of bull hide and a leather needle and a drill press. I started out with a leather Awl but that bull hide was more than my hand could handle so I chucked the needle in my drill press and used the leverage to push through 3 layers of that leather like cheese. Takes a couple hours to stitch a holster if your "project inclined at all".
The other two options are self explanatory so next, we need to know specifically what model of "western style pistol", there are many different styles & sizes from open top colts to Colt peacemakers to Colt Bisley models to Smith& Wesson Schofields to Rem 1875's....leather buckets will work for any of them but a good custom fit holster will require a model match.

If you want the #of my guy just PM me.

Walt Ostin. Some years ago was on Vancouver Island. Now, no idea, but may still be there.

Walt did excellent work ( he built both mine & my wife's rig 15 yrs ago) I think he has long since retired, he was talking of doing so back when he built ours.

The OP can specify a holster such as yours for his 1851 but he can also go with a more period- correct, form fitting "slim Jim" style.
