Custom M98 Build... Your Opinions are Welcome

Pretty much what i want. Im waiting until my house is paid off in 5 or 6 years then ill be commissioning the build of a pair of stalking rifles. 275 rigby and 375 rne. Case colored 98 actions. Express sights. Fine figured walnut stocks. Then a double in 450/400 3" and i should be done buying rifles. Unless a good deal comes along. Anyway post pix plz

Funny you should mention that... I have 5 years to go on my mortgage--because I spent too much on guns and motorcycles over the years. It was all worth it.

That's exactly what I did now that I am mortgage/debt free. While I'm not building a 375, there is a nice 275Rigby in the works from Chris Griesbach.

In my case you could add snowmobiles to your list as well. Please keep us up to date on your project, sounds really interesting.

Sorry gents, it appears my donor rifle was worse than a lemon. Oskar Kob just called me. He is an exceptionally kind man. He told me in the nicest way possible that my donor Mauser was butchered in every conceivable way and not possibly restorable. He told me that the front ring was ground in an angle (?) and there's very little material left. He said the wood stock was also very badly altered in an attempt to mimic a German style period correct piece. The bore is dark and also not worth keeping. It is now relegated to an Annapolis Valley tomato stake. I guess pictures don't always tell the whole story! Hopefully I will get a refund, and I will start a new search for a donor action soon.

Add premium bourbon and scotch collecting and drinking as well as becoming a father (took a year off work to stay home with my girl) then i ended up missing 17 weeks of work last year as my wife was suffering from an unknown illness im slightly behind where i wanted to be but thats life. Ive got lots of toys to keep me occupied

Sorry to hear about the shafting with the donor. When you send stuff to oscar you send the entire rifle obviously. Does he take the barrel off and put it back on after case coloring the action or do you ship it in pieces?

The donor rifle in question was a small ring 98 or a ground large ring 98? My thought was that it was a Danzig small ring 98.

Regards what you're after my suggestion is a Griffin & Howe style carbine with Mannlicher stock and Redfield peep on a 20 inch barrel. Because you're using open sights your stock measurements will be more important to pointability and balançe than a prone shooting gun. I would tune a military trigger and keep that simple or switch out to box trigger. No point in spending effort on anything other than BYF, FN, Husky, Oberndorf undrilled action. Wood is as cheap or as expensive as you want it regards raw material.

If it was me, undrilled commercial 96 or FN 98, full length wood, 19 inch barrel, Redfield style rear sight, use the sights from your bad donor on the barrel. Cut down a Brazilian 1908 for instance and let the onlookers weep in outer darkness.

Or on another wildly different tangent, based on your requirements, a factory style Mauser 71/84 sporter with full length stock. Those actions are already case hardened.

On my own to do pile I have a first year 98 action with shotgun bow and a mint Argentine 7.63 barrel, with an original coffin bottom metal and sporter stock I'll splice a full length forend onto. I use fairly extreme stock dimensions and this stock works for me with approx 4 inch pitch and existing cast-off.

Sorry to hear about the donor. I think that all the rounds mentioned will do the job but given you are going with open sites and I assume that the range won't be far the 9.3x57 would be my choice. Load it down to 35 rem. perhaps or leave it as is.

You need something like this .7 mm c/m #1 contour 22 inch 30's FN C rig comercial action with thumb cut, turned down and half checkered bolt .Some of the finest made 98 actions I have ever seen.I dare you to find a tool make or a score in the race ways and feed rails.I have three of these packages collecting dust .One day I will finish one and stock it .I would gunkote the barrel and sights .I have a blend that I have used on double guns, looks like rust bluing but is far more durable.Oskar could color the action.
