Custom molded earplugs by audiologist

I haven't been able to get my ear protection setup dialed in. Foam plugs don't always expand right when it's cold out. Messed with Decibullz for hours but couldn't get a good seal. Now using Howard Leight electronic muffs over foam plugs. I have the sound amplification turned up for conversations, but still has pretty good protection while actually shooting. None are ideal.

Looking through our extended health coverage, it appears audiologists are covered at $500/year.

Has anyone been able to get audiologist fitted custom plugs covered by insurance?

Any recommendations for an audiologist in the Vancouver area?

Any models/brands recommendations - how are the ones with filters? That way they can be left in the whole time.

I got custom fitted ear plugs, it was $150 and they are awesome. They are so comfortable you forget they are in.

I also got custom fitted electronic ear plugs too.

I have a couple pairs of the bass pro moulded plugs. They arent bad. I assume an audiologist would make better. It's a two part epoxy- mix the components and press into ear to set.

I have been using custom ear plugs for 20 years. Custom Protec in Surrey have been my go too, with sleepers and shooters.Be aware though even with ear protection the sound resonates through bone and has some influence on your hearing.R

I wear custom fitted ones by an audiologist which were paid for by benefits. I love them and intend to get a second pair in the next benefit year. I sometimes wear earmuffs overtop of them for the bigger booms.

I've got two pairs of custom plugs from different makers, the names escape me but one was in the Vancouver area, I found them at a motorcycle show and the other one in Alberta at a shoot. I keep one pair with my motorcycle helmet for road trips and the other pair I use shooting. Both pairs work very well, too well in fact because I'm constantly taking one plug out to hear conversations. Putting a set of electronic muffs over top with the volume turned up all the way helps with both the protection offered and the ability to hear. Both pairs were under $200 and I had the filters put in one pair, don't know how much good they do as I still can't hear people talking very well with them in.
I tried the do it yourself molding kits you find in the sporting goods stores but I found they don't fit all that well and are not worth the money. Best to contact your health benefit provider to inquire about coverage.

Most hearing aid stores can have them made for you.

I had a pair made locally a few years ago and put the bill in as business expense (self employed and used them at work plus on the range) so saved a bit on the cost.
I think it was about $150

Great idea. I checked my benefits and I have coverage as well. Never even thought of it. I will call on Monday to see if they need a doctors note first.

I was at a DU shoot, and a vendor who is an audiologist was there doing molded plugs, so I had a set made with the valve to allow me to hear normal conversation better. I only wish that I had done it sooner, they are so much more comfortable than foam plugs.
