Custom precision on a ($1500) budget

Since you mentioned the 264 win mag I assume that one of your actions has a magnum bolt face. I would just go to the wsm case as the brass is very strong, and it is something different that not many guys have.

You are correct. The stevens action was originally a 300 win mag.

6.5 WSM is something I hadn't thought of. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about WSMs (along the lines of 'gimmick' but some good things, too). Does anyone here have one to comment on performance? Is this a barrel burner or a more conservative chambering like the 260? I had a mind to make a real barrel burner and only load it really hot on special occasions. Since the WSM is so short, there would be a lot of room in the magazine for LONG bullets, which would be nice. Not sure how much bigger than 140gr I would want to go though without getting into a special twist bbl.

One thing I like about the 264 win mag is that not many people have one of those either, though it's harder to find brass since you cannot just neck down 270WSM. I like unusual calibers. Would the 6.5mm wsm still use a standard magnum bolt face? I notice the rim is a little thicker in the WSM case.

Is it necessary to use a magnum primer with the WSM? My thinking is that could effect accuracy, no?

That's nice.
Have you changed any of the factory parts on the rifle?
What barrel is on your 700P? The factory one?
A 700P has a standard 700 action.
The factory stock is a HS.
You do not need $450 worth of rings and bases to get accuracy.
A plus $2000 scope is great. But it is not necessary to use a scope in that price range to get accuracy.
It is possible to spend a lot of money and get a rifle that shoots like a dream.
It is also not necessary.

Using the stock barrel that came with the rifle. It has proven to be at least a 1/2 MOA gun with the stock barrel. I have had groups as small as .405" at 300yards (five shot group). While I think you can build an accurate rifle for under $1500, it will be tight and you may have to sacrifice some parts. For me, I like well made quality parts, hence my rifle is so expensive. Had a gunsmith turn the bolt, crown the barrel, adjust the trigger and clean things up, also glass bedding. Have had a lot of custom work on my Rem700P and love it.

Search for parts on the EE and you might get some great deals and my be able to put together a great rifle for $1500. To each their own. We are all in the same game, trying to find that one hole grouping rifle.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out......

I paid 75$ for my boyds target laminate stock. If you sign up for thier website you will be notified of any sales going on they usually have one a week. It did require some modification. I needed to fill a hole with acraglass and drill a new one to install my gun, but it works and is inexpensive.

264 Win mag can be made from 7RM brass so readily available if you can't the correct headstamp - let me know...

The WSM family will fit nicely into any magnum bolt face Savage. The short action is all that you need as the near 3" long mag will allow for the bullets to sit out nicely.

You will have plenty of case capacity for this bore and if run at full throttle, bore life will be short.

Magnum primers is not needed in warmer climes but may be a good idea if shooting in deepest darkest Canadian winters.

You can tune the load for accuracy with either type of primer.

The under $1500 project being discussed could use a 700 action, a HS stock (same as on your rifle), and a Kreiger or Shilen barrel. You were lucky and got a better than average factory barrel. Some factory barrels are consistant half minute shooters. It does happen. An unfired 700P barrel can be picked up for $100 -$150. Might or might not shoot as well as yours, a Kreiger or Shilen is very likely going to be accurate, better odds of this happening than with a factory Remington.
The quality parts that you appreciate in your rifle are as good as the ones in the $1500 project.
